Help I have lost my voice and got an interview for my dream job tomorrow

Just that really, lost through a combination of cough and cold and singing along to loudly to Rick Astley at Lytham festival last night.

What can I do to make it come back by 230 tomorrow?

I can't postpone the interview for various reasons and it's in person. I definitely don't have COVID because I had it a few weeks ago and I've done a couple of tests, plus I feel good apart from not being able to speak.

Help please I can't respond to questions with interpretive dance !

I have googled opening times for Boots and should be ok to get to one before they shut today.
Do I take the vocal zones today or wait until I need them ?

Nothing you eat or drink will soothe your vocal cords, so steam instead. Rest voice. Gently exercise voice with gentle hums. Drink a shit ton (water will eventually be digested and make it into your larynx cells, so that’s good, but ‘soothing’ things like honey and lemon won’t make any difference. Except maybe the vitamin C).

Also good luck for the interview!

Vocalzones etc great for clearing congestion but not if you’ve actually damaged your vocal cords. Ibuprofen a better bet as anti-inflammatory.

Take them today and tomorrow. You can’t really overdo them to be honest. One every two hours if needed. After your interview I’d obviously stop them and try and rest best you can.

Codene is a cough suppressant (apparently, it's not been very effective on mine today) just be wary of doubling up on paracetamol if you get cocodamol.

Be careful with this if you've not taken it before. Codine always makes me sleepy, sends me completely delally or both, which may not be ideal for an interview.

Vocalzone lozenges work well. You can get them from Boots.

This^
they are pure miracle. Plus nothing spicy, salty, hot, acidic, hard, scratchy etc for the next 24 hours and try not to talk.

Have warm milky drink before the interview.,

I went out and bought everything and now i'm feeling rough on top of the missing voice Confused. Those vocal zones taste repulsive, do seem to be helping though.
Hoping a snooze will revive me.

I did another covid test and thankfully it's not that.

Daub vic on your throat and wrap a headscarf around your neck - not very sexy but works

rookiemere · 07/07/2024 21:03

@Notaflippinclue do you mean VIC on the outside of my throat? Sorry probably dumb question.

OP posts:
Notaflippinclue · 07/07/2024 21:32

Yes - daub it on the front - then cover it to concentrate it and not get everywhere - then go to bed!

Temporaryname158 · 07/07/2024 21:36

I think the fact it’s face to face plays to your advantage. It shows that even if you turn up and have to write your answers down for them, you have a work ethic and don’t call in sick/to change the date

Veering OT but I loved him doing Smiths' songs at last year's glasto

Saw him years ago opening for Peter Kay at the MEN, didn’t know what to expect but his set was mainly covers of songs by Manchester bands and he was brilliant, he ended with Never Gonna Give You Up which had just about everyone up dancing.

OP, I hope one of the remedies here helps, good luck for the interview!

rookiemere · 08/07/2024 07:31

Thanks everyone, it seems a little better today, still not brilliant.
I plan to write loads out and keep it on a clip board, neatly highlighted so they can at least see I have put in the homework and have answers even if I can't speak them. I have found a site that speaks words.
It's not until this afternoon so I was wondering if I should email in the morning and let them know that I am coming but I am slightly voice impaired, also importantly that I have taken covid tests and I am not positive?

Yes, I’d let them know. Good luck!

rookiemere · 08/07/2024 07:40

@AGodawfulsmallaffair thanks I will email them.

For those more interested in the Rick Astley sidebar, the absolute best was his cover of Highway to Hell, I may have lost my voice during that specific song Grin.

He was supporting Madness at Lytham start delayed because of the football, he was excellent travesty to have him as a supporting act !

He mentioned going on late due to the footie!
He was absolutely brilliant last night
I hope you are feeling better and ace the interview

eish · 08/07/2024 10:59

Let us know how it goes and good luck.

rookiemere · 08/07/2024 16:20

So update, had the interview, not sure I answered all the questions as well as I could have, but at least my voice lasted !
They took me in early whilst I was still sucking on a vocal zone which I then had to swallow speedily mid sentence Smile.

Good luck and glad you got through it! 🤞

Yokooko · 08/07/2024 19:08

Glad that it went ok. Hope, they make you an offer.

notprincehamlet · 08/07/2024 20:25

Well done op (disappointing that you didn't get to demonstrate Seeing the Big Picture through your fallback medium of interpretive dance though)

rookiemere · 09/07/2024 13:52

I got offered the job Smile
