Afternoon Tea.........sandwiches?

BuyOrBake · 07/07/2024 08:48

Which sandwiches fillings would you expect to be served at an afternoon tea?

I'm helping organise one for charity and we can't agree, so I thought I would ask here for advice.

I'm not saying what we are debating having yet so that it doesn't affect the responses.

Cucumber, with nice butter or cream cheese on white
Smoked salmon on granary
Egg mayo and cress on granary
Posh ham and mustard (the hand cut type) on white

And some sort of small savoury tart, like roasted veg or feta and onion.

Given our demographic we are agreed so far on .

Egg and cress.
Ham ( we know mustard won't be popular)
Cucumber and cream cheese.

We want one more and can't decide!

A mixed cheese would give us a second veggie option, I don't think smoked salmon or prawm would be a crowd pleaser and are more expensive

Any other veggie options?

Cheese and tomato

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/07/2024 09:30

Whatever you finally decide on, they MUST be cut into triangles
(I know the Queen didn't like them that way, but she won't be there.)

Beginningless · 07/07/2024 09:35

Cheese and chutney would get my veggie vote. Coronation chickpea is quite easy and a bit different. But if you have any vegans, humous and grated carrot.

BuyOrBake · 07/07/2024 09:45

The demographic are elderly and traditional.
Tables of 8 with a selection of cakes on cake stands, fresh strawberries and cream and the sandwiches will be on trays / plates.
Veggie will be kept separate from meat.
We are not catering for vegans or gluten free and have been clear about that.

I'd offer at least a small number of vegan sandwiches, with salad and vegan mayonnaise.
Despite your refusal to consider vegans you may have people with dairy intolerance.

BuyOrBake · 07/07/2024 09:57

It's a ticketed event, we know we have no vegans or coeliacs.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a good old fashioned cucumber sandwich on an afternoon tea.

Typically I'd also expect smoked salmon and cream cheese, egg mayo, cheese and pickle or ham.

On posher versions I've had chicken and tarragon, prawn mayo (although I'm not sure that's any posher than smoked salmon) and roast beef & horseradish.

Fontainebleau007 · 07/07/2024 10:05

Cucumber
Salmon and cream cheese
Egg and cress
Ham and mustard
Prawn and mayonnaise
Beef and horseradish
Tuna and mayonnaise

Ilovelurchers · 07/07/2024 10:06

Ooh, love an afternoon tea. For another veggie option you could do:

Some kind of interesting cheese, like brie, possibly with mango chutney, something like that?

A veggie coronation chicken (replace the chicken with Quorn, or possible with mushroom)

A vegetarian version of duck with hoisin (see above).

Something with hummus

Mozzarella, tomato and basil

Jam!

God I love sandwiches......

Maddy70 · 07/07/2024 10:14

Cream cheese and cucumber

mitogoshi · 07/07/2024 10:17

Delicate usually so I would do ham and mustard, cheese and tomato, salmon, cream cheese and cucumber. Perhaps a coronation chicken.

Personally I would avoid egg as its marmite, and they smell!

westcountrywoman · 07/07/2024 10:18

Salmon and cream cheese
Egg and cress
Ham and mustard
Tuna and cucumber (🤮)

Miley1967 · 07/07/2024 10:19

I did an afternoon tea a couple of weeks ago and did cream cheese and smoked salmon, cheddar and chutney, egg mayonaise and tuna mayonnaise.

mitogoshi · 07/07/2024 10:20

I'm now thinking i need afternoon tea! Off to Lidl me thinks for some cream cheese, salmon and white bread plus scones and cream. I'll make a cake

Marmite27 · 07/07/2024 10:28

I’m doing afternoon tea in a few weeks for an older relative.

We usually have these two as standard:
*Egg Mayo on wholemeal sliced
*Ham on brioche rolls

Then two more of these choices depending on mood:
*Cream cheese and cucumber on white sliced
*Corned beef and brown sauce on white sliced
*Chicken & stuffing - any bread
*Cheddar & Pickle
*Beef & Horseradish
*Tuna Mayo
*3 cheese deli filler
*Turkey & Plum chutney
*Pastrami

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/07/2024 10:35

For not too expensive sandwiches, egg mayonnaise with cress or lettuce, cheese and pickle, cheese and tomato, ham and mustard, ham and tomato.

All of which used to be scoffed PDQ by the parents, when I made masses of them (triangular, crusts cut off) for little Gdcs’ birthday parties!

zeromango · 07/07/2024 10:36

My local tearoom does egg and cress, salmon and cream cheese and cheese and chutney usually as "standard", but not everyone likes those options obviously so they're happy to let you choose any filling you like (tuna, beef and horseradish, prawn Marie Rose, ham, etc)

MeinKraft · 07/07/2024 11:53

Turkey sandwiches are lovely, you forget how nice they are outside Christmas.
