Camera for beginner

My DH has talked for years about taking up photography. He's got an iPhone 15 pro max which has a decent camera I think? He enjoys taking photos on them but I know he'd like a 'proper' one.

I'd love to surprise him with one but no idea where to start 🤷🏼‍♀️ any suggestions would be appreciated!

How longs a piece of string?

can you give us an idea of budget. Dh spends more on photography than the average mumsnetter’s dp spends on cycling

Oh hell, I don't really know! £300-500? Would that get me a decent piece of equipment?

Just looked on Amazon and there’s a couple of Nikon (we’ve always been Nikon) DSLR cameras within that budget. If you can stretch just over that the d7000 is better than the d60, don’t ask me why it’s dh hobby. But for learning and just starting out either will be good. DH shoots in raw format then edits everything in lightroom afterwards which is a lot of the enjoyment for him.

don’t forget you also have to buy the sd card.

@Billybagpuss that's a great help, and gives me somewhere to start looking! Thank you Smile

I agree with the Nikon - I had a D3500 as my first DSLR camera a few years back, and it did me really well - I then upgraded to a Nikon D5600, so stuck with Nikon as it’s easy to use.

If you have one near you, Wex were really helpful in letting me look at cameras, hold them, and helped identify the right one for me. Make sure you get a lens with it (some are camera body only) and as PP said, you'll need an SD card.

There are some good second hand options too on MPB - I sold my old D3500 to them.
