Looks pretty good to me! What are people's thoughts?

The problem with speedy planning is for what, social housing, fancy flats?

Everyone agrees that more houses need to be built but they dont want them overlooking their back gardens? Would you?? Additionally those Labour MP's that have just been elected will be pummelled by the voters in those areas and will turn native especially if they want to be re elected.

This is not as easy as Labour are making out.

Also I dont see a great plan for reducing massive immgration. Built more houses (but they will never be enough!).

Another quango with a grand title Border Force Command run by a left wing government. What could possibly go wrong

Dinnerdinnerchickenwinner · 08/07/2024 11:52

I assume you don't live in an area that would be affected by this?

I do, in fact. I'm just not a NIMBY. We need more housing, especially affordable housing.

Tracker1234 · 08/07/2024 12:22

Well all those people who dont mind their views going or not being able to get into the local school because the local catchment area now doesnt include them - yeah right. I can see trouble written all over it.

People claim they dont mind but I honestly dont believe most of them. Sorry - tin at the ready...

Not everyone agrees. I think that this house building is a sicknessness and that the priority should be reducing the population because there isn't the infrastructure to support more and more houses and more and more people.

there aren't enough hospitals, schools, GPs with spaces on the list

the more houses you build the more people will come to fill them.

once that land has gone, it;s gone and you'll never get the green space back. This isn't Nimbism -it's about preserving nature, quality of life and quality of environment.

worse the visual and social environment is ruined and housing quality is poor driven by developers for profit.

near where I live were some large-ish nice family houses with good sized gardens. attractive living spaces and attractive environment. one by one they have been bought knocked down and replaced with crammed on cramped houses. one of them has a block of flats, another has 6 narrow horrible maisonnette things with three floors.

the properties built are ugly, tiny and claustrophic making just looking at them.

The whole agenda is wrong.

user09090909E · 08/07/2024 12:25

if you want to build a ton more houses, you need to build a ton more schools, hospitals and fund GP practices not to mention water supplies, sewage, roads and by-passes and train and transport capacity

I agree. They'll support the policy until they realise the reality.

I agree as well. It's very easy to pontificate about the greater good until you realise a block of flats will be built overlooking your garden, or you are one of 'the rich' you have called upon to pay more tax in the campaigning.
I don't care what people say or think about themselves, there are very few people who would knowingly and willingly support a policy which would make them worse off financially or in other ways.

kirinm · 08/07/2024 12:36

I love that Labour have said we will announce proposals in the House of Commons not leak it to the press first.

They're doing well so far.

aquamarine2 · 08/07/2024 12:49

I cannot get an nhs dentist so go privately to one close to me. I went in May as an emergency and paid £95. The dentist couldn't work out which tooth was causing the pain so told me 'wait and see'. Now I know which tooth it is because it has developed a slight crack so called to make another appointment. They have charged another £95 even though it is not an emergency. When I relayed the previous appointment outcome it made no difference apparently because the tooth would have to be re examined to decide on course of action. I have paid but am furious

I don’t know how much you think a teacher gets in pension after paying a considerable amount in superannuation monthly (and yes I know it’s subsidised by the government). I get, after 41 years of unbroken service, approx £1800 a month after the latest increase. I realise this will seem like a lot to some people but there are many many people whose pensions are far larger than this - people on huge salaries, people who receive massive bonuses (often undeserved imo) which teachers and NHS staff are not entitled to, no matter how hard they work.
People who have had the opportunity to build up savings and investments - there are a lot of people in this category, more than you might think. They wouldn’t even notice if the state pension was removed from them.

So let's get this right - people on huge salaries will get a better pension than a teacher. Really? Who would have thought.
It's like a thread I once responded to on here where a low-level local authority planning lawyer kept saying she could be paid £100k+ if she worked in a London law firm, to demonstrate how 'poorly paid' public sector jobs were. The jobs were in no way comparable and neither is comparing your pension with the pension of someone who earned more than you!

This really doesn't bother the majority of women. I couldnt care less if someone identifies as a woman, cat or a house plant

Everyone should be treated with respect

I think you will find it does resonate with a lot of women. Very shortsighted to suggest otherwise.

I think that pp can only speak for themselves anyway not how the majority of women feel about say, men in women’s sports

To think of means tested pensions is absolutely disgusting, so you have worked all your life paid a lot of tax and when you're retiring your will get little or no pension because you have been prudent all your life but someone who has never worked or spent all their money will be rewarded with a pension,.another screwed up idea.

Indeed - isn't it great then that this is just another lie intended to smear Labour and whip up sentiment against them?

BIWI · 08/07/2024 17:43

@croydon15 don't worry. It's just a whole load of misinformation from disgruntled Tories and Reformers.

IClaudine · 08/07/2024 17:52

The likes of GBeebies can smear and scaremonger all they like. Labour won the GE and Starmer is PM for at least the next five years.

Have a look at the Mc Cloud judgement many of us have 20+ years in the final salary scheme.

Yes. But it’s not final salary now or for anyone who joined after 2015.

CurlewKate · 08/07/2024 10:45

@Dinnerdinnerchickenwinner "I'm more worried about the plans to "reform" the planning process that are currently on the agenda."

To build on brown sites?

This is an old Tory idea but again there's no detail about how they will encourage developers to build on brownfield sites and remove the current barriers to doing so.

pointythings · 08/07/2024 17:58

SnakesAndArrows · 08/07/2024 17:54

Yes. But it’s not final salary now or for anyone who joined after 2015.

It's also not massive amounts unless you're on a very high banding - I have 22 years in the old scheme and I'm absolutely not going to be rich. In fact it's likely that I will have to work part time into my 70s (which I'm actually fine with).

misty64 · 08/07/2024 18:15

The big problem is the housebuilders are lacking the tradesmen to build all these houses and building large amounts of houses devalues them, they prefer to build few houses that they can get a higher price for.

CurlewKate · 08/07/2024 18:53

Could you link to when anyone was asked?

Hopefully the housing will be a mix of one and more. Councils to build more homes. More money to council for the infrastructure for extra dr, hospital dentist schools etc.
Extra money for buses and road maintenance. The roads are full of pot holes and the bus company keep cutting the bus service.
