Looks pretty good to me! What are people's thoughts?

@cakeorwine because we want to?

Or are we only allowed to discuss things that you approve or / things that are rubber stamped Labour policy?

So you are discussing things that aren't policy and haven't been talked about.

It's not even in the Daily Express - and they would be the first over it.

cakeorwine · 07/07/2024 18:49

Seems like he's had a good few days.

Nice to see him go to Scotland today

TeenagersAngst · 07/07/2024 18:50

@cakeorwine define 'talked about'

Some guy went on national radio and started talking about it. That's how it ended up on this thread. We didn't just make it out of thin air for shits and giggles.

Why are you so riled that people are talking about it even if it is hypocritical? And frankly, something like this happening is not entirely outside the realm of possibility

Papyrophile · 07/07/2024 18:50

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow and @CurlewKate ... well you are a lot more gracious about sharing the proceeds of your lifetime savings than I am! I applaud your social conscience but don't intend to see the pennies I put by for my retirement shared with everyone who failed to save.

TeenagersAngst · 07/07/2024 18:50

*hypothetical

It's spreading fake news.

That's why.

People seem to think that Labour are introducing means tested pensions.
And they aren't.

People see headlines and jump to conclusions.

And worry.

You do know that not everyone can afford to save?

AmelieTaylor · 07/07/2024 18:52

HeadNorth · 07/07/2024 18:19

Well, Rwanda wasn’t a solution, it was pointless, expensive, gesture politics. Maybe we can now work more cooperatively with our neighbours in Europe on a solution instead of indulging the far right.

@HeadNorth i don't disagree that R was an expensive & ridiculous idea & im happy he's binned it off, but my point IS that it's all very well claiming Brownue Points for binning things, but he has NO policies of his own.

Europe is not interested in co operating with a solution because they see it as our issue.

Papyrophile · 07/07/2024 18:55

My savings are not hypothetical. They are the result of 35 years self-employment, during which there was f--- all fallback social security for the self employed. I earned the money and paid the tax due at the time, then I saved it, and I will pay the tax on it when I take it as income.

CurlewKate · 07/07/2024 18:57

It does seem a little strange that we are all devoting so much time to something that as far as I know hasn't even been suggested as a likely policy.....

80% of British voters did not vote for him. That must really weigh on your mind as a person in power that you are either disliked or that inconsequential to people's thoughts? 🧐

She didn't say your savings are hypothetical, she said the policy of means testing pensions was hypothetical.

🙄🙄

Indeed

Papyrophile · 07/07/2024 18:59

@NoWordForFluffy , so????

That is not my problem. My job is to make sure that I'm not a burden on the public purse. If you are, you have my sympathy. My taxes will mitigate your pain.

CurlewKate · 07/07/2024 18:59

Not really. It's going to be part of addressing the challenge of an ageing population and low birth rate. If older people have enough to live on why would they need a government hand out?

That has made my decision. I am cashing in my pension and retiring early. I will be entitled to a state pension then at 67.

CurlewKate · 07/07/2024 19:06

Oh well, they'll make £780000000 on the £50 a month dog licence....

And what about those who have paid extra NI credits to get a full state pension? Do they get a refund?

It isn't about that. It is about saving public services, services which belong to us all regardless of income. The NHS is broken, we have private health insurance but still understand that it needs saving and that it needs to be paid for. Ditto care services, prisons etc.

Melisha · 07/07/2024 19:22

I could not afford private health insurance. I want my state pension.

Papyrophile · 07/07/2024 19:22

The NHS is broken because it's wasteful and inefficient. I spend enough time in oncology departments to see it first hand several times a year.

Patients don't value NHS services sufficiently. DH was scheduled a complex day case procedure 18 months ago, in December, with another five people booked for the same treatment. Only he and one other person actually attended. The approximate cost of each procedure was £15K per person if paid privately, so the 60% no show rate wasted the time of eight nurses, two surgeons and two anaesthetists, plus a whole unit of specialist IT support and a crash team. Apparently, this is normal.

ghostyslovesheets · 06/07/2024 16:25

I love the appointment of James Timpson - prisons minister with actual experience of prisons and employment of offenders. I am a huge fan of his family and their business so yay!

Yeah, me too.

I love the way that they have their business work done in the prisons on the cheap and have the government train their future staff on our taxes.

It looks fantastic on the outside but is rotten to the core inside.

As for the rest of Liebour. Wait and see, then regret.

And this is why this country is in this state.

Like you said, you are literally talking about pennies in tax.

Locusteater · 06/07/2024 16:52

God knows how much the whole thing cost the tax payer though.

240 million so far!!!

CurlewKate · 07/07/2024 19:49

This thread is really eye opening about how false news happens. Scary.
