Can a tradesperson insist on being paid in cash?

They have been found via Checkatrade but I can't find anything about this on their website. The job is around £500 and they have asked to be paid in cash. I'm reluctant not to have a proveable payment history after being burnt with the previous tradespeople. I am using checkatrade to try and avoid cowboys. Do I have to pay cash? TIA.

Also we own a business. We take all payments. Many pay cash often over 1k. And often they say ' lose the invoice ' we don't as we have overheads to cover but still you'd be surprised the amount happily hand over cash

I think there'a a massive difference between someone who works in the black market & hasn't ever paid a screed of tax in their life & others who pay their taxes from their day jobs & then takes on a small job or two on the side but look you're obviously very passionate about this & that's okay

Not paying tax on earnings makes them part of the black economy 🤦🏻

Check a Trade is awful, impossible to leave a bad review and only frequented by those who can’t get work by word of mouth!

They can but you don't have to go with them. You can use someone else.

If you want to use them, then you have to accept their already-stated payment method but ask for proof of payment either receipt or confirm it via text or message.

I've used checkatrade many times and I usually pay by card. The few I paid in cash was when I first started using them but I got receipt as well as written confirmation via text (One was hesitant and i had to make sure there was payment acknowledgement so I used email and text for security).

But this thread is about a day job.

Problem is where do you draw the line. Everyone can find a justification for why they shouldn't pay tax, or why they should get more benefits
.
But my biggest gripe is that those who are evading taxes are seen to be fault free but those claiming benefits are seen to be spongers.
Both cost the country.

Messaging him to say we will pay by bank transfer has resulted in him adding £200 to the cost to make it "above board" 😱 Cheeky bastard.

You've got proof of tax/ CMS evasion.

Call him and tell him £500 Bacs or a word with the Revenue. Enjoy his response.

Then email the screenshots to HMRC hotline. He's one to avoid.

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints yeah fair enough, it went over my head that this is in fact his day to day business, also in fairness to that man he most likely IS paying his taxes

I really don't think there's anything more we can say to each other, you've taken a good few personal swipes at me & I'm not one for arguing relentlessly on the internet

Feel exactly the same!

@Biggleslefae I don't

I'm se

And if given cash I still have to put it on the bank to pay my bills so don't give a discount

Actually it's more hassle to go to the bank or post office and deposit

They should pay me more for cash 😂😂😂

They will do SFA as they don't have the staff.

Actually it depends what their trade is whether they can just rely on word of mouth.

Trades like independent locksmiths have to advertise somewhere as they are one off jobs, there as electricians and plumbers can be called in multiple times over the years.

What? Say it out loud, actually threaten to report someone to HMRC!? If anything happens a furious vengeful tradesperson will know exactly where to find you.

Most builders want cash so they don’t pay VAT
