Dds bags been stolen in Greece - no phone or money

Dd is in Zante and had her bag stolen last night when they were out (both hers and her friends)

She is due to fly home today, she has her passport but all her ticket details etc were on her phone. She has £10 in sterling and they are an hour from the airport.

She's fine but panicked (she's 18 and first holiday away)

I've advised her to speak to the reception desk to try and work out a way to the airport.

How can I send her some cash? her flight home is at 2 this afternoon

Can you call the hotel to book and pay for an airport transfer (and a meal) for her, with your card?

Jojobees · 06/07/2024 09:40

Can you call the hotel, pay over the phone and they give her some cash?
could you send her friend some money?

Yeah, this

ButtSurgery · 06/07/2024 09:42

Western Union? If she has a place near her to pick it up?

Star81 · 06/07/2024 09:43

Ask at reception if they can use a computer as presumably her flight / ticket details are in her email there and print off.

look into western union and see if you capuld yeasfer cash that way

Jo7890123 · 06/07/2024 09:44

If you can find a reputable taxi company there, you could pay them a deposit to pick up the girls and take them to the airport, then pay the remainder when they're safely dropped off there?
Trying to think how u could get money to her, but with the above, at least they have a good chance of getting that flight.
Once they get there, I'd suggest they go to the desk of the relevant airline and explain the situation; the airline should be able to look up their flight details, and with them having passports, should be able to help them get home as planned I think.

Namechanger8 · 06/07/2024 09:45

Also, the ticket shouldn’t be a problem, if she goes to the check-in desk at the airport and shows her passport, they’ll print a boarding pass for her.

Jo7890123 · 06/07/2024 09:45

Doing it thru hotel sounds better, those replies appeared as I typed mine above!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/07/2024 09:48

You have spoken to her on her friend's phone and checked that it is actually her?

If so, the holiday rep if they're on a package will be able to assist and advise.

Fuelledbylatte · 06/07/2024 09:49

I'd be asking reception how to transfer money over to their system so they can withdraw it. There must be some sort of way to do this.

The tickets shouldn't be an issue because they are linked to the passport number and the airport can check on their system- probably go an hour early and get help there.

Poor things- really crappy thing to happen on their first holiday.

CaptainCabinets · 06/07/2024 09:55

Oh bless her. This happened to me when I got mugged in Tenerife when I was 18 but they got my passport too 😫 plus my phone, entire makeup bag and even my flip flops! Then dumped my bag in an alleyway.

Someone needs to contact her phone company and explain what’s happened so they can block the phone, I did mine within about 4 hours but they still managed to run up a £400 bill (pre-smartphone so no passcode!) calling everyone they could think of in Somalia.

Can you transfer money to her friend so she can get them both home? Thank goodness your DD and her friend are safe and unhurt, that is the main thing. Everything else can be replaced.

ThePassageOfTime · 06/07/2024 09:56

She should call her insurance provider who should sort transport and meals

ButtSurgery · 06/07/2024 09:57

Actually, really good point by PP - she needs to speak to her insurance company.

And have you checked it's really her and not a scammer?

If it's Ryanair / Wizz etc she will have to pay for that!

Longma · 06/07/2024 10:00

Does she have travel insurance?

JLT24 · 06/07/2024 10:01

Surely she is with a friend/friends who have a phone and bank card? Get her cancel her bank card and block the phone immediately. Use a friends phone to download the tickets from her email account or contact the airline. Pay the friend back for the taxi to airport/food once they are home or transfer their friend money today to cover the cost??

FrenchandSaunders · 06/07/2024 10:03

What a horrible end to their first holiday.

Speak to hotel reception.

Yes this. Have you spoken to her and heard her voice before you start sending money?

Edited

I agree with this.

I would transfer the friend the money in advance.

They can speak to the hotel about printing the tickets and arranging transport to the airport etc but it will still probably be easier to transfer the money to the friend.

Thank goodness the friend still has her stuff!
I hope your DD isn’t too shaken up.

AdoraBell · 06/07/2024 10:05

Does she have travel insurance? If so the insurance company would deal with the hotel etc, If her friend has her phone could you send money to her?

User364837 · 06/07/2024 10:07

OP says her bag and her friends so assuming the friend is in the same position?

I think I’d ask the hotel reception for help

gardenmusic · 06/07/2024 10:12

Is she travelling with a company? Is there no rep available?

hastalava · 06/07/2024 10:12

I hope everything gets sorted whatever way it works out. Whose phone did she use to call you? If you didn't hear her voice (whatsapp or text messge only) are you sure it's her?

If she used a friend's phone and they have a card on their phone you could transfer instantly using friend's details. As long as you are sure it's her friend! What is her friend doing who also had her bag and phone taken? Maybe they can work together.

If you are sure it's her, do as pp said and get hotel to sort out transfer, they may also arrange a packed box of food or something to take with her.

I know phones can be stolen from the most vigilant among us, but a second card on holiday is a good thing to have.

whojamaflip · 06/07/2024 10:13

Both her bag and her friends bag were taken when they were out last night- she rang me from a phone she borrowed from some other British person they had met when out there - cam up as an English mobile number and I rang her back on it to confirm.

She gone to speak to the reception desk to ask about airport transfer - I've told her to get them to ring me and I will pay for it over the phone. I've also told her to speak to her insurance company and to get to the airport as a priority.

I've just cancelled her phone sim but can't stop her bank cards which are stored on the phone as she can't remember her password 😩

Doesn't seem to be a western union anywhere near her unfortunately to transfer cash.

If she can get to the airport then she will be fine.

She's a sensible girl and I believe it's all above board - we have a family safe word which she would have used if there was something dodgy going on so I'm fairly sure it is just a case of a stolen bag.

I just feel so helpless but she and her friend are ok just pissed off that someone helped themselves to their bags - still a harsh life lesson learnt 😔

Will she need to contact the police to report the theft? Otherwise it's likely she can't claim on her travel insurance.

I'd definitely be leaning on the Hotel reception for help to book and prepay with your card for a taxi, contact the police etc.
