Dds bags been stolen in Greece - no phone or money

Dd is in Zante and had her bag stolen last night when they were out (both hers and her friends)

She is due to fly home today, she has her passport but all her ticket details etc were on her phone. She has £10 in sterling and they are an hour from the airport.

She's fine but panicked (she's 18 and first holiday away)

I've advised her to speak to the reception desk to try and work out a way to the airport.

How can I send her some cash? her flight home is at 2 this afternoon

She needs to call the bank and get her cards stopped asap. She could ask the hotel to let her use their phone? Even if they charge her for it (obviously she’ll have to pay once she’s home!).

Travel insurance are unlikely to be able to help much at this point as expenses like this are usually pay and claim back but worth calling them to check.

whojamaflip · 06/07/2024 10:41

I've managed to get into her iCloud account on her laptop (thank god for password auto save!)

Delinked her cards from her phone and put the phone into lost mode with my number as the contact point in the (frankly unlikely) event that it is found.

No contact from dd so I'm just hoping she's at the airport or on her way there - she should be booked in by 1.30 her time which is 11.30 our time.

I hate not being able to contact her but she's an adult and I need to trust she can work this out.

I shan't settle til I've fetched her from the airport though........

She's with friends. Send one of them some cash.

Fightthepower · 06/07/2024 10:51

What a shame this happened to them. Was she out when they took their bags? Only asking as it’s something I can tell my own DC to be wise to when they are away?

Am sure she will be back soon at least she still had her passport. You and she will feel much better when you’ve given her a hug.

If it's Ryanair / Wizz etc she will have to pay for that!

Well so be it.

What an awful situation OP and hopefully it's getting sorted, but a lesson to her any everyone else. Never rely on a single point of failure, especially one that's easily lost, stolen or damaged.

Always print out a copy of your boarding passes, accommodation and insurance details and leave them in your suitcase in your hotel, along with a card that's not linked to your phone. Then you're not completely stuck in this situation.

I was also wondering how their bags were taken for similar reason?

Glad you could speak to her. Hopefully she'll be home soon and the last of it can be sorted.

In my case, I was pushed by one man and another grabbed my bag as I stumbled. It is incredibly easy to do if it’s a shoulder bag, and even easier if you are a ‘professional’ thief! Even now 12 years later, I only wear cross-body bags.

If it helps, it was two of the men selling sunglasses and other tat.

Good luck to your DD OP. Similar happened to DD last summer in Barcelona, but thankfully she had a couple of days to get everything sorted before their return!

I think a lot of people are missing the info where the OP said both her and her friend had their bag taken and neither have money or phones! How can either of them check in at the airport if they have no means to pay to print their boarding pass? That is what the OP needs help figuring out.

whojamaflip · 06/07/2024 11:31

It's their day bags that were taken - I can only assume they had been out for the day and gone to a bar and they were lifted from there 😔 I didn't ask what had happened just tried to concentrate on the next steps to be honest.

I've had a text from the person whose phone they borrowed to say they are now on their way to the airport.

Hopefully if they have to pay for boarding passes they will be able to ring me from the desk phone and I can pay direct 🤞they re travelling with easyJet but I don't know their rules about printing boarding passes etc

Well done for teaching your daughter your phone number!

Well done for teaching your daughter your phone number!

That's actually the one thing in all of this that I will be forever grateful for!

Well done for teaching your daughter your phone number!

I was just thinking this!

I am going to make sure my DD knows my number off by heart!

Are you picking them up from the airport OP?

Bless them.
They sound like really sensible girls and I hope this won’t put them off travelling in the future.

Bollindger · 06/07/2024 12:19

The other thing you do is have all your tickets passport ECT photographed and send photos to leave with family....
This way easy to show if lost.

whojamaflip · 06/07/2024 12:21

I'm not supposed to be picking them up from the airport - dds friends parents are doing that as far as I know but dd was supposed to confirm that they were doing the collection so I can only hope she will manage to contact me if things change.

I don't have any contact details for the friends parents nor do I know if they know what's happened. That's the trouble when they get older - it's not like when they were at primary and we had phone numbers for parents - I've not even met them!

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 06/07/2024 12:24

Easyjet shouldn't be a problem. They'll just print her boarding pass for her.

TheSquareMile · 06/07/2024 12:44

I'm assuming that everything is sorted out now.

If not, would this be the relevant Honorary Consul for the area where she is?

MotherJessAndKittens · 06/07/2024 12:51

Is it possible to contact her bank and give her name to see if they can do anything? She should report it to the local police for a crime number for insurance.

Longma · 06/07/2024 13:09

JLT24 · 06/07/2024 10:01

Surely she is with a friend/friends who have a phone and bank card? Get her cancel her bank card and block the phone immediately. Use a friends phone to download the tickets from her email account or contact the airline. Pay the friend back for the taxi to airport/food once they are home or transfer their friend money today to cover the cost??

Edited

The op says that her friends bag is stolen too.

whojamaflip · 06/07/2024 13:10

My problem now is I have no way of getting hold of her - the number she rang me from belongs to someone she met while they were out there and they have texted to say the girls were on their way to the airport. Not sure if dd will think of reporting it to the police but if she hasn't then there's nothing I can do about it from this end.

As long as she makes her flight and she's home this evening then that's all I'm worried about now - the rest is replaceable and as far as I know the girls are ok.

OP posts:
Longma · 06/07/2024 13:11

Did they get a crime reference number for travel insurance?

We have a joint family calendar on our phones.
I insist on all flight and hotel booking references being added along with holiday details, ideally with the document attached too.

MrsCatE · 06/07/2024 13:18

Are you sure this isn't a scam?

MrsCatE · 06/07/2024 13:20

Have you actually spoken to her or is this all done via text? If you ring the good Samaritan's number do you get connected or is there white noise?

MrsCatE · 06/07/2024 13:23

Apologies- just seen your comment re family safe word - very good idea!
