Dds bags been stolen in Greece - no phone or money

Dd is in Zante and had her bag stolen last night when they were out (both hers and her friends)

She is due to fly home today, she has her passport but all her ticket details etc were on her phone. She has £10 in sterling and they are an hour from the airport.

She's fine but panicked (she's 18 and first holiday away)

I've advised her to speak to the reception desk to try and work out a way to the airport.

How can I send her some cash? her flight home is at 2 this afternoon

I would assume the friends parents would be there and waiting.

If not and DD knows your number off by heart then I’m sure the airport will let her ring you.

Do you know what time the flight is meant to arrive?

whojamaflip · 06/07/2024 13:51

Flight is due into Bristol at 9.30 so I just need to sit on my hands until then!

I was supposed to be doing the pick up and her friends folks were taking them down but that was changed due to a family emergency on dds friends side. So I ended up taking them to the airport.

I'm not sure if the friends folks are able to collect them but that was what I was led to believe was happening. Of course in the normal scheme of things I would have had confirmation of arrangements from dd but that's not going to happen now.

How do you know these facts? My daughter txted me as she’d lost her phone & has a new number. I don’t have a daughter!

AutumnLeaves5 · 06/07/2024 14:02

For future trips - I always take an old phone and a different cash card which I leave in my hotel room/separate bag so I have a back up if needed. It’s also worth having a little notebook with important phone numbers, passwords (but written in a way that only makes sense to me!) and a copy of my passport. I’ve done quite a bit of solo travel so perhaps more cautious than most!

whojamaflip · 06/07/2024 14:04

I've spoken to my dd and it's was definitely her - I haven't transferred any money to her and her phone on location finder hasn't updated for 9 hours. Phone goes straight to answerphone when I ring it and the WhatsApp message I sent this morning before I spoke to her is still sitting on a single tick for delivery.

If it's a scam they aren't getting anything out of me, dd has her passport and as far as I know is at the airport waiting for her flight home. As I said previously we have a family safe word which we use if any of the children are in dodgy situations and if she was being forced to speak to me she would have worked it into the conversation- it's only ever been used twice - once when DS needed a lift home when his designated driver decided to get drunk and once when dd felt unsafe at a party and needed to escape. Our safe word means we do what's needed no questions asked.

So I do believe her

That’s a great idea OP

This is really good advice Thankyou!

Dd is taking a year out to go travelling (if this hasn't out her off that is!) so I shall suggest this to her for future trips

Check her insurance doesn't have some emergency bail out capability.

For tickets use the hard copies you printed out as backups.

I never bother printing these days.
I work on the basis that we all have our phonics plus know passwords if we need to use a computer or alternative device.

Was this not a package holiday? With company reps?

Choochoo21 · 06/07/2024 14:41

If you know the name of the friend, could you look on DDs Facebook or something and try and contact the girls family from there?

ExecutionersBong · 06/07/2024 14:59

I blame MashtagBrady

Possibly not, as the Op has not answered this question. You only have to read the many posts on the travel board to see how everyone feels they can do it better and cheaper themselves (until something goes wrong) and everyone says ‘speak to your Rep’.

Ex rep (from the good old days when 95% of holidays were packages and everyone had a Rep) - I would have been able to help her with everything very quickly, transfers, tickets, getting money sent to our head office and then to her etc.

But the OP has pretty much sorted that out anyway. I'm nearly 60 and can only think of one holiday in my lifetime where we had a rep. Just needs a bit of contingency thinking beforehand on the very slim off chance something goes wrong.

whojamaflip · 06/07/2024 15:14

I have no idea if it was a package holiday - dd is 18 and the girls booked it all themselves.

I did make sure they had travel insurance and that they knew not to carry all their money with them at all times, how to keep safe when abroad, don't drink the water from the taps, check how clean the toilets were before they ordered food out etc etc

But as we all know shit happens! I would assume that as they were at the last night of their holiday their cash was running low so she took what was left with her assuming they could always access more through her phone 🤦‍♀️

I haven't heard anything else from them - their plane departs in half an hour and I've not had a phone call to pay for their boarding passes to be printed so would assume that provided they've actually got to the airport they are sorted 🤞

It's their day bags that were taken - I can only assume they had been out for the day and gone to a bar and they were lifted from there 😔 I didn't ask what had happened just tried to concentrate on the next steps to be honest.

I've had a text from the person whose phone they borrowed to say they are now on their way to the airport.

Hopefully if they have to pay for boarding passes they will be able to ring me from the desk phone and I can pay direct 🤞they re travelling with easyJet but I don't know their rules about printing boarding passes etc

When my phone got smashed at the airport, Easyjet printed me one out free of charge.

Pp who said they always print boarding pass before they leave and store in the room... How? You can't check until 24 hours before flight.

AtomicBlondeRose · 06/07/2024 16:39

I’m going on holiday in two weeks and already have boarding passes there and back printed out! I checked in online ages ago.

SwedishEdith · 06/07/2024 16:56

Depends on how much baggage you're taking and the airline, I think, whether you can check in and print off your boarding pass weeks before your flights.

MrsPositivity1 · 06/07/2024 21:23

I hope your daughter got home safe & sound x

whojamaflip · 06/07/2024 22:52

Just spoken to her - she landed at 9.35 ( completely got her flights times wrong trying to work out the time difference 😳)

Her friends parents have collected her and they are on their way home - I'm going to pick her up in about an hour. She seems in good spirits although she sounds knackered.

Didn't have a phone call to pay for EasyJet to print out her boarding card so assume she sorted that no problem.

Anyway she's back safe and sound thank god!

Thankyou all for the handholds and the advice today - it's definitely been a long one!

Glad she's back and you can relax.

andjustlikethat1 · 06/07/2024 23:07

Keep an eye on her phone bill incase they have purchased from app stores. Most phone providers will wipe any charges within the first 24 hours of a phone going missing so it's a really good idea to always have a no purchase pass and a spend cap on telephones

On easyJet I have been able to check in a month before 🤷🏻‍♀️
