Where to go / stay around Lake Garda?

DP and I are going away this summer to celebrate a big birthday (mine!). I want to go to Italy as it’s been years since I visited. I’ve had a really tough time in the past year, and want somewhere I can relax, enjoy great scenery, great food. I’ve chosen Lake Garda as I thought we could relax at a nice hotel / by the pool / on the lake, but go to Milan / Verona / Bologna for day trips if we felt like it.

But there’s so much choice! How do we choose an area to stay and a hotel?

For context, we’ll be going in September. We’re in our 40s, no kids, have a bit of money to spend. I haven’t had a holiday for six years - I’d like a bit of luxury and ideally a hotel with a nice pool and a spa so I can book a few treatments.

We stayed in Torbole. Was lovely. Malcesine is even more gorgeous!

If you want to go by rail stay in Peschiera or Desenzano. By road on the east coast but the lake road can be very congested. For a quieter time the west coast is better, Limone or Gardone Riviera. Sirmione is lovely but very busy during the day.

I've just come back from Bardolino which is lovely. Lots of accommodation and restaurants. Quite a big town. Bus service to other places is good but as PP said - the traffic can be quite bad. Garda town and Malcesine also beautiful. Not so keen on Peschiera but will be easier to get to Verona, Venice etc from there.

I think Bologna is too far for a day trip tbh. Trento is nice and closer.

We love Sirmiogne and stayed at a hotel right on the headland. Malcesine had a good market on Saturdays and you can have coffee at the water’s edge. You can get to Verona by coach and go to the opera. Quite an experience.

Just come back from the Park Hotel in Desenzano.
Lovely boutique hotel with outstanding food and great lake views. Desenzano is great for transport and has a very large market every Tuesday.
And if you like art there's a rather important Warhol exhibition on at the Castle.
