Possible spoiled vote 🙄

I went to the polling station straight after work. I think I might have spoiled my vote by not thinking nor reading (IT'S BEEN A LONG DAY) and started to do a check sign rather than an X. I then tried to correct it and ended up looking like it had tails. anyone else this daft or just me?

It's fine, even if it was less recognisable as a cross, if it's close the spoiled ballots will be looked at and your candidate will successfully argue that it's a mark for them.

It is fine, if only in one box they'll count it.

Remember this story "In the 2015 general election, Conservative MP Glyn Davies was awarded a vote he wasn't necessarily counting on when a rude image drawn next to his name was determined to be a valid vote.
Mr Davies wrote on his Facebook page at the time: "One voter decided to draw a detailed representation of a penis instead of a cross in my box on one ballot paper.
"Amazingly, because it was neatly drawn within the confines of the box the returning officer deemed it a valid vote.
"I'm not sure the artist meant it to count, but I am grateful. If I knew who it was, I would like to thank him (or her) personally."

It's OK but I wouldn't worry about it anyway as you will never find out.

Unless your preferred candidate loses by one vote. Then you can tear your hair out.

A true story about spoiled ballots:

In the Glasgow Cathcart constituency a paper was judged to be spoiled as the voter had written beside each name: “Bastard.”

However, the Labour election agent successfully appealed that the vote should go to John Maxton as beside his name the voter had actually written: “A bastard, too – but not as bad as the others,” which he claimed was a clear voting preference.

You can do a tick , a cross, a willy, a blob or a smiley face, just as long as it's in the box and you have only voted for one and not put any identifying marks on it.

Anything doubtful will go to the RO for adjudication but yours won't need to get that far.

Best bit of working elections is seeing the spolit papers. Sooooo many cock and ball drawings and angry rants and swearing. Best, best, best bit was then having to show the fruity rejected ones to candidates. Got to have a thick skin to be a politician.

Former Returning Officer here - that’s fine 🙂
