I just worry an estate won't deal with fields very well! I'll have a look though.

My little Skoda Fabia does really well crossing fields as long as they're not too wet. But if they're too wet it doesn't matter what you're driving, it's going to get stuck.

XC90. My last one did 200k miles before it started to go wrong. Currently have one 12 years old and going strong. I tow horses and harrow our paddocks with it. It's a brilliant car and really tough. I've got farmers tyres on mine though.

On that budget I would steer clear on anything with a Landrover badge. You get good ones, but I've owned about 7 different landies and only because my DH is an engineer.

They are complex machines and cost a fortune to fix and so go wrong.

Some Audi estates are also 4x4 the all road.

Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4.

Range/Land Rovers are expensive and are shit and unreliable.

Buy anything else at your peril.

Do not get a ford kuga auto. Gear boxes go and cost more than the car.

If you don't actually need 4x4 capability, an estate is a far better bet. We had a Peugeot and it was like the tardis... huge boot.
However I have one of these older (11 plate) money sinking Freelander 2s, and I LOVE it. Cost me 6k. Tax is expensive ..£145 for 6 months, but it gets me camping, kayaking , the boot is great for the dog and if I need more space the rear seats go totally flat. It's smooth to drive, lovely and high, and it makes me happy.
I would have got a Honda CR-V if I had found one but I got my FL from a local specialist and it has been well services so felt it was ok.

Are you talking muddy fields in January, or camping fields in the summer? Because my little Aygo used to do fine in fields.
