What's going on with my new pyjam bottoms?

Just had some summery pyjamas delivered and I'm confused by the shorts! There are two ribbon loops sewn inside, looking at first glance like the ribbons you find inside tops for keeping them secure on a hanger. But... the loops are really long (as long as the shorts) and one is sewn into the centre back waistband and the other is sewn inside the right side of the waistband, so if you hung them up they'd be lopsided anyway. There are also ribbon 'belt loops' sewn into the centre front waistband and the left side of the waistband.

I've never had confusing pyjamas before, can anyone help?!

Sorry, title should obviously read pyjama

No idea but if they don’t seem to serve a purpose I’d just cut them out!

WhereIsTheHare · 03/07/2024 11:43

I would think it’s so the set can be hung together from a coathanger in a shop, with the top hung by the shoulders as usual and the shorts suspended from the ribbons and thus hanging down below the top as if they were on a person.

I did wonder that, but the ribbons aren't either side, (one is centred back and one on the side) so it would hang lopsided. Plus there's the strange internal ribbon belt loops too. Of all the things I've needed an instruction manual for, it's never included pyjamas before Grin

Surely you just cut anything extraneous off once you get them home, though? And at that point it stops being an issue.

I don't think it's an issue for OP - I think she just genuinely wants to understand the loop things. ( I would probably wonder too)
Have you never been curious about things before without it being an 'issue'?

Of course! Hence my quite long hypothesis. But ultimately, if there’s no explanation, it doesn’t mean that the pyjamas aren’t wearable. No amount of curiosity will keep me from my sleep.

setmestraightplease · 03/07/2024 18:27

I don't think OP thinks they're unwearable, she was just wondering :)

Totally with you on the curiosity vs sleep! (tho actually, in the interests of full transparency ............ it can depend where I am in my cycle /time of the month 😳 - 😆 )

MendingTheNets · 03/07/2024 18:47

It certainly wouldn't keep me from my sleep, it's just really odd and, with clothes these days, cost cutting is always top of the agenda for manufacturers. So why are they paying for these long ribbons to be sewn in such a strange place, and what's with the matching small ribbon loops inside? And yes, I'm one of those people who always wants to know 'why' Grin

Yes its this you are supposed to hang them as a fancy set.

MendingTheNets · 03/07/2024 18:53

If that was the case though, surely the ribbons would be one each side. The way they're sewn in, they'd look like one leg is about a foot longer than the other as they'd hang lopsided. It's not a mistake either, as another pair is the same.

DoublePeonies · 03/07/2024 19:14

Do the internal loops allow some weird folding magic, that then allows them to be hung, folded in half, beneath the top?

I think you fold them in half

MendingTheNets · 03/07/2024 21:01

Aha, I think the must be it. Fold then in half and then hang them up, that makes sense... although the inside little ribbon loops are still puzzling. And does anyone actually hang up their pyjamas?

It's a bloody stupid idea isn't it. I mean the hanging loops are as long as the shorts. I can see a scenario where I put my leg through a leg hole AND a loop and all manner of chaos could ensue.

OP are these M&S pjs per chance because I wondered the exact same thing (for half a second before I took the scissors to them 😂)

AndSoFinally · 03/07/2024 21:59

Don't you feed the long loops through the short loops to kind of fold them in half, and then hang them by the long loops on a hangar?

AndSoFinally · 03/07/2024 22:01

Definitely cut them off though, otherwise won't the long back loop get stuck between your bum cheeks?! (Speaking as someone who is large of arse, this feels like it would be a problem)

I knew it! 😂 maybe we are not fancy enough for M&S pjs...

MendingTheNets · 03/07/2024 22:30

It's making me think of Dinner Ladies and the 'complicated gusset'.

Will definitely be cutting them off, don't want to get them stuck anywhere unexpected, and I don't want to lasso the dog if she hops on the bed in between us in the middle of the night.
