On reference request can the new employer ask the reasons why?

My cousin left her last job and didn't say reasons why - she left due to a bullying manager and gave her notice without any job lined up. The manager knew it was because they clashed etc, but cousin didn't put reasons on her notice letter.

She gave a reason why she left to the new employers , that she had to care for a sick relative , as they asked in the interview but she didn't give those reasons to her old employers- she just put on her letter she was resigning

Will it come up ? Could it ruin her new job?

Thank you

It will be fine. If the companies I worked for are any guidance, they only ever confirmed if the person worked there and their roles, they won't go into "would you employ them again " "were they utter gibshites" etc
