That the word factory is a shortened word for 'manufactory' which makes more sense.

I grew up in London and for some reason I always thought the Isle of Sheppey was a beautiful holiday island and vowed that one day I would take a trip there.

When I was 29 I finally got to visit it (as part of my employment).

OMFG. A total dump.

There used to be a factory near me called Halls & Pickles but when you looked at the sign from a distance it you couldn’t see the ‘&’, so always thought it was Halls Pickles. There was a field outside with crops in as we were passing one day and I just commented to my DH that they must be growing onions for pickling. He looked at me peculiarly and I said ‘for the pickled onions’. After he nearly wet himself laughing he mansplained that it was a steel factory! And he told everyone!!
