Is Wednesday the worst weekday to have as a non working day?

Due to childminder availability it’s looking like Wednesday will have to be my NWD. I work in the public sector so not sure what that means for my bank holidays. I am planning to do 90% of my hours over 4 days.

My ideal day off would’ve been a Monday. If anyone has Wednesday off, what’s it like?

I liked it because you never have more than two work days together, it really broke the week up.

Anythingforcake · 30/06/2024 18:36

I like it, I never have to work more than 2 days in a row which is a blessing with small busy children

Bosabosa · 30/06/2024 18:37

My friend did this for years and really liked the mid week break.

mummyh2016 · 30/06/2024 18:37

I think it depends on the job. Will Wednesdays work get done when you're not in or are you going to spend 2 days out of 4 catching up (ie on a Monday from the weekend and a Thursday from the Wednesday)?

stressedespresso · 30/06/2024 18:37

I think that it’s nice to have a break in the middle of the week. My new day off is a Monday and to be honest I’m not a fan. Nothing to really do after being busy all weekend and I’m not tired enough to need a rest!

Georgesbar24 · 30/06/2024 18:38

I did it for a while and it was my first choice. It felt like I’d had two days away from DD and had renewed patience and appreciation for her if that makes sense.

Also separating it from the weekend positioned it in my mind as ‘special day off’ and did something more valuable than just stringing out the weekend.

Also it breaks up the working week.

MeOldBamboo · 30/06/2024 18:38

That used to be one of my days. Breaks up the week and if I did any activities with the kids, they were generally quieter e.g. Legoland/Farm Park. Supermarkets are quieter too.

beckybarefoot · 30/06/2024 18:38

my working week is 8 days long, i work 4 on and 4 off (all part time).. i don't think it makes any difference what day is what.

AderynBach · 30/06/2024 18:38

I have Wednesdays off, I really like it. Two days on, a day off, two days on, two days off. It feels like a nice balance. But I do suffer with quite bad fatigue so that factored into my decision to have breather in the middle of the week. I don't feel a long weekend every week would be as good for me, personally.

It’ll be done when I’m not there. The way my work currently is, I can’t imagine it having a knock-on. Very few deadlines

Most teachers in France have Wednesday afternoon off - I think primary teachers get the whole day. It's good because you can get marking/prep/admin done, so the weekend is free. Plus it breaks up the week nicely.

Exactly this. I much prefer a dedicated ‘nice’
day rather than just a weekend extension.

Butterflyfern · 30/06/2024 18:40

A colleague does it. Says he loves only ever being 2 days away from a "weekend". He says the only downside is that it's generally a busy work day, so plenty of events he can't attend and his inbox is busy on Thursday morning

mummyh2016 · 30/06/2024 18:41

@HelloFrogs in that case go for it! Reason I asked is because in my job I'd still get allocated work on a day off so come Thursday I'd be stressed out with having 2 days of work to do.

Exactfare · 30/06/2024 18:43

It's my day off, a colleague suggested it as you only ever work 2 days in a row! I love it, really breaks up the week

Applesarenice · 30/06/2024 18:46

It’s the best day to have off! Breaks up the week, you never have to get though more than 2 days without a break.

MyMotherWasANarcissist · 30/06/2024 18:46

I think it’s a good day but personally prefer a Tuesday.

I don’t know why but I just don’t like Tuesdays, it’s a nothing sort of day. I work every weekday morning now and really miss my Tuesdays off.

AreThereSomewhereIslands · 30/06/2024 18:47

For the past five years, my DD's worked a five-day week with Wednesdays and Sundays off. It suits her down to the ground - she uses Wednesdays for GP and dentist appointments, tradesmen's or maintenance visits, bank trips, bill-paying and any other errands or in-person meetings that aren't possible on Sundays. It's apparently also the cheapest day to have a mid-evening supermarket home delivery.

hendoop · 30/06/2024 18:47

I work from home on Wednesdays and find it really splits the week up, can get washing done and keep on top of things more

Motnight · 30/06/2024 18:48

I really liked having a Wednesday off to be with my toddler.

NCJD · 30/06/2024 18:50

I had a Monday off for ages. Purely for childcare reasons. I then worked Tue-Fri (and potentially Sat/Sun as per rota). I’m a hospital junior doctor.

It paid in bank holidays. But otherwise I didn’t like it. I had 3 intense days with my small DC then I didn’t see them much again for 4 days, especially during weeks of heavy on call shifts. I didn’t really look forward to Monday as ‘my day off’ as it felt no different from the weekend. DC were really craving time with me beyond mornings/evenings by the end of the 4 days.

I swapped to a Wednesday and then subsequently a Thursday and it’s been much better. It’s a lot more balanced, the kids feel they see me more and the time we spend together feels more ‘quality’. I would only go back to a Monday when the DC are much bigger and it gives me more opportunity for a long weekend. I won’t consider it again while they are still little.

Hope that helps.

FoFanta · 30/06/2024 18:54

Loved having a Wednesday off when I did 4 days a week. It broke the week up, it felt more like a "day off", it was easier to catch up with life admin, and as lots of people had Mondays or Fridays off, it meant that those days tended to be a bit less heavy. In a cruel twist of fate, Wednesday is now my busiest day.

WickerMam · 30/06/2024 18:57

This was my preferred day off. It meant DC were only ever in nursery two days in a row max, and ditto me and work. It was a nice mid-week recovery day from long commute and bad sleep, in the early days.

It's quite a common day to have off too, so I found lots of friends had the same day.

My DH had a Monday as his day, he he was always complaining about things being shut.

The worst day would be Tuesday or Thursday I think. Going to work for single days would be disjointed and inefficient.

Foib · 30/06/2024 18:58

Wednesday is my day off too & I do enjoy having a break mid-week, the only downside is that my beauty therapist doesnt work on Wednesdays so I have to book an evening or saturday appointment with her anyway
