Is Wednesday the worst weekday to have as a non working day?

Due to childminder availability it’s looking like Wednesday will have to be my NWD. I work in the public sector so not sure what that means for my bank holidays. I am planning to do 90% of my hours over 4 days.

My ideal day off would’ve been a Monday. If anyone has Wednesday off, what’s it like?

I think Tuesday or Thursday would be worse. You'd have one work day on its own, in between days off.

Wednesday is a nice break in the middle.

I have a Monday and a Wednesday off. I prefer the Wednesday as it feels like a break rather than the Monday when it feels like three hardcore parenting days on the run 😬

DisgruntledPelican · 30/06/2024 20:41

DH had Wednesdays off for years, pre and post DC. He liked it.

L1ttledrummergirl · 30/06/2024 20:43

Wednesday was my favourite day to have off, it broke the week up nicely.

ThursdayTomorrow · 30/06/2024 20:46

No. It’s the best day.

grafittiartist · 30/06/2024 20:47

It's the one I'd ask for every time. As others say- two days at a time- perfect.

I think it’s a good day but personally prefer a Tuesday.

I don’t know why but I just don’t like Tuesdays, it’s a nothing sort of day. I work every weekday morning now and really miss my Tuesdays off.

I agree Tuesday is the best day to have off. The Sunday night blues isn’t as bad as you only have Monday to deal with, start your week off well and then you have a nice day off. Then only three days or hard work to get through before the weekend.

Also Tuesday is the busiest for commuting so nice to avoid it.

However if you can’t have Tuesday off, Weds or Thurs is great.

I wouldn’t want Monday or Friday off!

TimeForMyMonthlyNameChange · 30/06/2024 20:48

Sounds like my perfect non-working day. Shops are too busy Mon and Fri for doing errands. Never having to work more than 2 days in a row? Bliss!!!

CelesteCunningham · 30/06/2024 20:49

I've always worked ft but loved having Wednesday as a study day before I qualified. Nice day to be home as it broke up the week, and it also worked well at work since deadlines are always Fridays so I could set everything up on Tuesday to tick over when I was off on the Wednesday and then pick it back up on the Thursday.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 30/06/2024 20:50

I used to love Wednesday as my NWD, called it my mid week weekend!

Superfoodie123 · 30/06/2024 21:00

Had to do it with my first baby due to nursery availability. Purposely chose it for my 2nd as I love having Wednesday off now.

Hibernatalie · 30/06/2024 21:06

I chose Wednesdays and loved it. Only worked 2 days in a row and Tuesdays were my mini Friday. I had bank holidays off though.

TheOGCCL · 30/06/2024 21:08

I chose Wednesdays. Three day week when it's a Bank Holiday. Fridays are becoming very quiet and lots have that day off so plenty of time to catch up with stuff.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 30/06/2024 21:12

I'm going down to 4 days from September and I have a choice of Wednesdays off or 5 short days. I've chosen Wednesday but I was a bit annoyed I couldn't have a different day. So I'm glad you started this thread OP, as I feel better about it now. Not sure why I didn't fancy Wednesday. I think I feel like it will be 2 days then a day off then 2 days, so I can't get into the swing of things properly. My kids are at secondary school so my day will be spent doing something frivolous!

socks1107 · 30/06/2024 21:16

I always liked it. I could reset the house and washing, and no more than two days in together.
I wfh Mondays but am about to swap to a Wednesday

Springbaby2023 · 30/06/2024 21:22

To go against most other posters here, I love a Monday off. Means I don’t have to worry about bank holidays / teacher training day cover etc. and I always feel like I’ve had a proper break from work. I don’t think I could switch off from work on a Wednesday as much. That said Monday was never my first choice and I’ve grown to love it so I think you just make the most of what you have.

Nollie85 · 30/06/2024 21:24

I love my Wednesday. Everything is open, I never work more than 2 days in a row, it’s a break midweek from the alarm / commute etc and when parenting a toddler gets HARD, I appreciate a Wednesday with them more than I think I would a Friday or Monday. I look forward to my Monday morning break at work after two solid days of toddler parenting! Also, in a bank holiday week you only work 3 days.

CCLCECSC · 30/06/2024 21:24

Midweek off is advantageous around where we live; so much more happening for under 5s. Mondays a lot of places shut because they open Sunday.

Sparklehead · 30/06/2024 21:29

I love having a Wednesday off and can’t I again wanting to change it any time soon. As pp’s have said, it’s a nice rhythm of 2-days, break, 2-days, break. My job is busy and can be stressful so I really use my Wednesday to reenergise. Also, it makes childcare for the school holidays seem more manageable, somehow. On the weeks with a bank holiday Monday, you only need to take the Tuesday as a/l and then you have half the week off!

Invent · 30/06/2024 21:29

Everyone knows Wednesday is THE longest day of the week. Having it as a day off is genius..

Everything is open unlike Mondays. You still get bank holidays one way or another.
Friday is a waste of a day off since many places have half finished for the weekend so working is a pain to get anything done. Busiest on the roads too.

BlueJayCailin · 30/06/2024 21:29

It’s my day off and it’s great! Mon or Fri - both of which I’ve had in the past - always get eaten by the weekend / lumped in with it somehow so you end up not feeling it. Weds is always different and lets me catch up! Plus for my job lots of the fun stuff is Friday (trainings or office drinks or whatever) so I don’t miss that

SquigglePigs · 30/06/2024 21:32

I had Wednesdays off for a year or so when DD was little and it was fabulous. Never long til a day off and she loved only doing 2 days at a time at nursery before she got a day with me. Work wise it was good because it was no worse than me having a day out on site or in meetings and it all flowed through the week well. I was around for Monday kick-off things and Friday delivery deadlines.

Negangirlxx · 30/06/2024 21:39

Nah, I used to have Wednesday off, and it was great!

It really helped to break the week up.

Windysquall · 30/06/2024 21:42

It’s fine unless you get hammered by using your AL to cover Monday BHs. I got caught out by this in a previous job.
