Urgent travel insurance question - Mexico hospital

So I'm in Mexico and I've had some bad food poisoning, it's dragged on for days and I nosedived last night and ended up being blue lighted in. Was all very scary.

They started emergency treatment and my partner gave our travel insurance details ( virgin insurance) and the hospital said your insurance doesn't cover this hospital and you need to pay.
We ended up having to pay $3,000.

I've declined all further treatment, they wanted to do CT's and all sorts, have got some medication and we fly home today. I'm not well but just need to get home, going to my local ED straight from the airport.

We cannot afford $3000, my sister kindly transferred the money so we could leave, I now owe her the money.

I was brought in in fairly hairy circa and didn't have a choice which hosp I was brought to.

Is there anything I can do? I'm panicking.
We're going to have to cancel our wedding, it's such a lot of money to us.

I'm so stressed and upset and I just need to get home asap.

Any advice welcome.

Have you personally contacted your insurance? I wouldn’t be inclined to believe anything that this hospital said if they were wanting to do a CT scan for food poisoning.. Sounds like a scam

Phone your insurance company - it’s the first thing you do, even before going to hospital

What did Virgin say when you contacted them? Sorry you’ve been unwell.

Yeah. You need to speak to your insurers yourself. Did you get paperwork from the hospital in case you can make a claim.

I get travel insurance through AMEX. I pay and get reimbursed. What does your travel insurers say.

StripedTomatoes · 30/06/2024 17:58

The hospital will probably be used to dealing with US tourists more frequently and their health insurance is fiendishly complicated. You might be able to claim the money back from your insurance. Have you not been in touch with them at all?

LIZS · 30/06/2024 18:01

Sometimes insurers do not cover private hospitals if there is a state funded or alternative option . But the insurer should advise you which they can. Sorry you feel pressured to travel on a long flight unwell. However I'm not sure you would be covered if you attempt to fly against medical opinion and the airline could refuse you.

fieldsofbutterflies · 30/06/2024 18:05

What kind of hospital was it?

Some won't pay out for private care if there is a state option available.

Contact the British consulate - it could be a scam or one of the dubious hospitals - read the internet.

What have your insurance company said?

KatieLGriff · 30/06/2024 18:21

This happened to a good friend in Mexico last year, they had to pay £4k for emergency treatment. However they rang their travel insurance provider, sent the proof and got it all reimbursed a couple of weeks after they returned home. Ring Virgin asap just to log the event, most insurers expect you to do that pretty quickly. Take care.

The normal thing is to call your Insurance Company as soon as you can and speak to them.Your partner should have done this when you were admitted. The hospital could well be lying.Call the Insurance now before you leave Mexico.

I hope your journey home goes as well as it can in the circumstances.

This. Contact with your insurer ASAP is essential and they must be kept up to date with any developments. You can’t just leave it to the hospital

saraclara · 30/06/2024 18:37

Yes, the insurance company should have been contacted immediately. All you can do now is call them and hope for the best. But you have to be prepared for them to protest, as you went ahead without calling their 24 hour emergency service.

suburburban · 30/06/2024 18:47

Double check with your insurance , Mexico is very corrupt

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/06/2024 18:48

Call the emergency number that's in your policy urgently.

PollyPut · 01/07/2024 23:20

what did your insurers say? That's the first call - to them
