The Kitchen Cabinet R4 and woe is me....

Hullo chatters
wasn't sure where to post this but it's not an AIBU.....and I wanted to show and maybe get reciprocal Jay Rayner appreciation.
i have listened to TKC since it started on R4 2012. Lots of foody, informative and goofy banter. Great panellists. Hosted by said Jay. Since I moved overseas 6 years ago I have listened to it on BBC Sounds app, along with many other programmes I enjoy / love. Two weeks ago, 5 episodes in, series 44, it came up flagged as "UK Content Only". Thought it was a glitch. But no. Zippiddy do dah. So, I wrote directly to JR and was surprised to hear back from him within 24 hours ! (And his mailbox is not monitored by serfs, as he himself puts it) It was a very personal message in which he expressed his own frustration about it. Apparently the Beeb have overlooked - for the last 12 years - that the series does not have an international licence ! Wah. Reader, I cried actual tears.....
(And a vpn doesn't work as the Beeb's geo thingy is very clever in this respect)
it's like losing a comfort blanky...
Little sob story over. Big up Jay 😻

I’m sorry! I love the Kitchen Cabinet as well and would be really upset if I couldn’t access it. I always listen to R4 when I’m abroad and didn’t realise that you can’t access all the programmes. Maybe you need to move back?

@Pottingup aw thanks for posting - yes I was / am really upset ! But not enough to up sticks for ha ha....trying to work something out with my tech savvy son. Then The Archers came up flagged the day after and I practically had a brain melt ! But that WAS a glitch.....
You can tell I am a Beeb baby, mum always had the radio on in the kitchen whilst we were kids...used to listen to Round The Horn etc at lunchtime. The Goons (she would be in stitches) Didn't have a tv til I was 12. And I carried on the tradition. It makes me feel cosy. The one thing I can't listen to any more is The Shipping Forecast. I get overwhelmed with nostalgia. Couldn't the Beeb have let the last 2 episodes of TKC series 44 slip under the net ? Since it took 6 years for them to notice !
Anyone else got favourite comfort go to's on the airwaves (Beeb or otherwise) ?

Have you tried accessing it through a VPN switched to UK?

irridium · 29/06/2024 19:31

Would this happen if we go abroad on holiday and BBC Sounds downloaded on our phones don't work?

FortunataTagnips · 29/06/2024 19:35

Oh, that’s so annoying! I’d be gutted, too.

I used to have a vpn but the Beeb have got really good at geolocation...my son is looking into it again. I used to access i player but stopped paying licence fee not long after I jumped ship.....

Oh no! I love The Kitchen Cabinet.
I listen through Spotify, not BBC Sounds. I don’t suppose that might work?
Small comfort, but Jay Rayner and Annie Grey both write great books too.

i don't know irridium...depends where you go I guess ! I guess you could download the programme in advance but maybe not listen live ? Not sure if international includes Europe - I never had a prob in France for example (tho' that prob IS international now ! )

Ha ha MaGuele love the user name ! That's a great tip I am going to check it out tout de suite ! Yes Jay is a very entertaining writer too ...and his message about the problem was very touching (I am not the only Brit left bereft obvs)
