South Devon ideas with 4yo?

We are going to a cottage in south Devon, nearest town is Totnes I believe. I've visited north but never south before. It looks lovely, especially Salcombe and Brixham. Please can anyone recommend days out / local activities or beaches, suitable for a UK holiday with a 4 year old?

Thank you!

Head down towards Kingsbridge / Salcombe and there are some great beaches like Bantham and Bigbury-on-Sea.

Lucky you! So close to wonderful Bigbury Bay.

Ooh we have holidayed near totnes twice. There’s a great model village at Babbacombe and a rare breeds sanctuary thing by a train station which is lovely, can park in totnes and walk in if I remember rightly. Doubly good if your kid likes trains!

Rare breeds centre. Get the steam train to see the butterflies and otters at Buckfast. Paignton zoo. Coleton fishacre. Blackpool sands very nicely maintained but not sand.

Plymouth has the aquarium and also boat trips from the Hoe if you want to drive in.

Stoke Gabriel for fab crabbing and a picnic. Take your own gear. Broadsands beach is a firm favourite here

Mumof1andacat · 29/06/2024 14:39

Pennywell farm will be great at that age

Paignton is great for the pier with the amusement arcades and crazy golf at the end of it. The fun fair is usually on the green all summer, and there is often a circus there for the summer too. Paignton beach is lovely too.

Mizydoscape · 29/06/2024 15:13

I'd do Crealy over Woodlands for that age

Lotsalotsagiggles · 29/06/2024 17:21

Yes agree crealy wpuld be bettwr

Model village is lovely and whilst there, there is a cluff railway in babbacombe on to the beach

Canadian876 · 29/06/2024 17:58

Thanks for all the suggestions! Will Google all this stuff. So many attractions, theme parks and days out it seems. Alongside ticketed stuff we will probs have time for a couple of mooches around nice seaside fishing villages on the trip. Are Salcombe and Brixham the nicest?

Cranch's sweet shop in Salcombe (I think there's also one in Totnes).
Catch the passenger ferry from Salcombe to the East Portlemouth side. The beaches on that side get the afternoon sun. Millbay is a privately owned beach with lovely clean sand and a stream running down it. 3 generations of my family have dammed it over the years.

Start Bay lighthouse
Slapton Ley nature reserve
