Just that!

A good haircut,
Tidy nails and moisturised hands
Polished shoes
Ironed clothes
Good posture with an air of confidence and being content in ones self
Having an up to date knowledge of current affairs
Pronouncing ones t's

Clothes/car/house can be new and flashy or old and worn out, that does not signify wealth at all. It is something much deeper than that

WayOutOfLine · 03/07/2024 10:37

As this thread has illustrated, it depends what kind of wealthy you want to look and where you want to fit in, and for what purpose.

I think often words like 'wealthy' and 'classy' are used to mean 'I want to look 'better'' and given we don't know how you look right now or what you feel insecure about, it's hard to give advice.

I don't hang around in the countryside so none of the advice about fitting in with the rich neighbours would work for me, I have hung around with some of these groups and it's not my style at all! That's not because I'm not styled right, though, it's because I'm not a wellies, riding, quad bike type of a gal and don't want to spend my time on those activities.

If you need to look wealthy to fit in with HNWI clients, that's another whole thing.

its very hard to look wealthy without actual wealth as the key factors involve money and spare time. It’s the year round glow from all the holidays & lower stress levels that makes the difference.

I'm wealthy, but self made not inherited. I'm a professional, I work for it. I do not have free time or low stress levels.......I fear this shows in the grey pallor, eye bags, unkempt hair and permanent worry line. Hey ho. Cant have everything.

namesnamez · 03/07/2024 10:47

Natural fibres.

HappyMe6 · 03/07/2024 10:48

Good haircut.good makeup not necessarily expensive, slim body, wear black and silk blouse.good bag as in something that looks expensive doesn’t have to be, minimal jewellery gold or silver.short manicured nails.light tan, while I don’t feel the need at all to look wealthy, I have these things in my wardrobe. And yes i scrub up well when I have to, but you will also find understated clothes jeans etc there.I must admit I’m intrigued to know why you want to know how to look wealthy! Are you out to impress a certain someone op or are you just interested as to how people perceive wealth

Why? I'm well off but am quite happy looking like a tramp!

Mmm, yes. I was going to mention that but thought better off it.

However I think if you stopped proffering that tin with the word 'Change' on it outside Waitrose, you would look less tramp-like. Oh hold on! Are you collecting for Labour?
You see Xyz1234567, I'm not the only one who thinks you are a prat!😂

I'm thinking in an Emily Blunt/ Sienna Miller/ Pippa Middleton type way if that makes sense?

Well the only real answer to that is to simply be genuinely very, very, VERY wealthy.

Domestic Staff, Chefs, personal trainers, stylists, surgery…and designer clothes

Sorry, OP.

Learn to tell the quality of clothes so you can spot an actual bargain and not be duped into overspending on a label. There are lots of you tube videos that will show you what to look for.

Squeeze the fabric in your hand for about 30 seconds to see how it will wrinkle with body heat. And look at your hand through the fabric.

Look at the seams to see if the weave of the fabric lines up- if it doesn’t it won’t wash well. Even better if the pattern lines up as well.

Look inside the back collar and along the shoulder seams. These need to be reinforced or they will sag quite quickly.

Some cuts are more classic than others - shirts/blouses with a yoke will last longer than those without which are fine for fast fashion but won’t last as long. Never buy an unlined coat or jacket.

Avoid white, cream and light beige unless you can actually afford the cleaning bills.

I am quite wealthy but spend very little on clothes always get masses of compliments on how I look - my clothes mostly come from Sainsbury’s/Primark/Adsa (so no logos obviously 😂)
Good posture and clothes that are not tight.
Correct size bra.
Move calmly, don’t scuttle.
Speak slowly and listen carefully.
Never lose your cool. Just know your shape and dress accordingly.
Look at your image from the back.

lovelyjubblys · 04/07/2024 08:06

wear navy blue
wear monochrome or single colours, no flowery patterns
no false nails, hair extensions, false lashes or botox
no labels or obvious brands
no sequins or glitter or bling unless you're going to a Taylor Swift concert
no obvious fake tan. Natural skin better
no bodycon or dungarees or pyjamas in the street

Have a look at Tatler's or Harper's Social Pages.
There will be lots of Lady This and The Hon That.
Is that the vibe you want ?

I feel Tatler has become very new money and is not the look the OP is hoping for.

This is my point really. A wealthy person has the right type of body frame/structure/posture, so it really doesn't matter what they wear, they still look wealthy. You could spend one million pounds on me and I'd still look like crap!

I had a boyfriend in the early 80s whose parents were what you might call the faded echo of aristocracy. Everything shabby, antiques everywhere, treated casually and used for everyday, she wore pearls for gardening with hands that looked like she gardened, books, pictures, falling apart clothes, madly polished and mended good leather shoes for both. Muddy wellies in the porch, 50s ballgowns still hanging whispering in the wardrobe. Silver photo frames with black and white pics of them in their youth at all the season's events decades before. He was vague and kind, corduroys, soft well worn check shirts, ancient tweed jackets and full black tie somewhere in the background if ever needed. A spaniel. They lived in a portion of a ramshackle mansion in the middle of nowhere. There had been money, lots of it, once.

I love this description!
especially the “50s ball gowns still hanging whispering in the wardrobe”

WayOutOfLine · 05/07/2024 00:12

Do you mean their everyday looks, or their red carpet ones? If everyday, I think they are all very thin, toned (lots of exercise and weights), tanned (despite what everyone says, most rich thin people are pretty tanned), expensive hair and very large fancy bags. Their actual clothes are not that exciting- nice denim in the latest style, shirts and tops in plain colours. I think it's their tans, sunglasses and bags (and great but discrete jewellery) that add what you are looking for.

madaboutpurple · 25/01/2025 01:21

i get most of my clothes from charity shops. i do use ebay and vinted. A lady on a bus journey told me about Vinted so I had a look and was impressed .I often get asked about my clothes, coats and accessories and the majority is from charity shops.I know a lot about the styles that suit me and can soon tell if it is something that I will treasure. Some people tell me they would never go to a charity shop and i just think they are missing out. I am retired now but used to work with the public and often got asked about my clothes. I see some style consultants actually say they can take clients to charity shops now. Years ago when I went to a consultant it was a case of visiting the chain shops. At least in charity shops I can get more individual clothes. I am plus size as well.

Catsfishybreath · 25/01/2025 10:37

@madaboutpurple

I had a neighbour who used to look fantastic because she had the back of knowing how to accessorise. Most of her stuff came from Primark . It's not what you wear, but how you wear it !

Theothername · 25/01/2025 10:40

I think it depends on what you think wealthy looks like. If it’s fillers, Botox, gel nails and high maintenance hair colours, that’s really hard on a shoestring. But if your experience of the wealthy is the cash strapped land rich, tight investors, or tech billionaires you can get look quite easily.

Dont be fat. Wealthy folk are always slim. I dont know why.

Money!

Personal trainers, gym memberships, healthier food options tend to to be more expensive, beauty treatments, tweakments and surgeries.

Not forgetting competition…especially if the money is the man’s.

NewNameBridget · 25/01/2025 11:05

I'm sure someone will have said this upthread, but;

Money talks. Wealth whispers.

If something looks is loud, showy, brash, it'll only ever look like money, never wealth.

Go on Vinted, if you know the brands you like, search that, otherwise put in your size and put in 'cotton' 'linen' or whatever, and then find nice natural fabric outfits in key colours that you like depending on your preference. I think white and cream look good, black and navy, the odd pattern, but in the main don't buy any more polyester and don't buy printed stuff unless you absolutely love the pattern and can put it with something good (e.g. white t-shirt or shirt).

You can look around charity shops but they often aren't carrying recent stuff around here and so the jackets/trousers look a bit dated. I do still find the odd bargain though!

Leather shoes and bag (new or Vinted).

You won't necessarily look 'wealthy' but you will look well-put together.

Kate Middleton wears prints!

Better diets, healthier lifestyles etc

If you're on minimum wage with 3 kids, you can't afford avocado, salmon a D gym memberships etc

Kate Middleton wears prints!

You missed the part where she says 'put it with something plain , like a white T shirt'. That's the key to that sentence.
