I cannot afford the prices in the likes of Specsavers and I was wondering if anyone has bought their glasses online?

I need glasses for long distance, most definitely. I'm pretty short sighted so can't do without them.

When I wear contact lenses, i know have to buy reading glasses for small printer. I buy them in Pound Shoos but I'd also like to buy nicer, fashionable ones.

AND (greedy) I'd also like to buy readers either tinted frames. Do such things exist?

Sorry - I realise that I've asked for 3 different bits of info here but e separate posts would be odd, perhaps!

I've bought several pairs from Glasses Direct and always been happy with them, they let you do an at home trial too for most of the frame, you pick a few you'd like to try on, they send them out then you have 7 days to return them.

How strong is your long distance prescription. I find that the stronger it is, with astigmatism, the more you struggle with online sales. Plus you need to know your PD measurement.

I have used Zinff.com for glasses as I wanted a couple of spare pairs as I cannot see without mine and they have been good and I have a strong prescription. They do lots of offers on frames and lens but they do come from abroad, but both my pairs arrived within 10 days.

Bloody hell I definitely need glasses! My spelling is atrocious 😫

I'm -5.25 equally in both eyes. Not sure of PD measurement but me eye test is still valid and I'm sure Spec-savers will tell me.

I’ve been using Glasses Direct for years too & never had a problem.

I love glasses direct, I have a stronger prescription than you, so they will do yours. If you can’t get your pd glassesdirexr have an app they recommend to get it.

OP, try Asda. They were hopeless for me but I'm sensitive to base curves. You'll need yours thinning down to a 1.67 I guess. Im surprised specsavers are too expensive as they charge maybe £40 on top of the price? Cant see online being any cheaper.

I bought reading glasses to wear over my contact lenses from Flying Tiger. They were £3 and much better quality than the Poundland ones. They had some funky designs and have lasted really well.

Online glasses are quite limited to fairly simple prescriptions - mine is very complex so can't get them

I thought this too but have just checked and Glasses Online have changed their offerings to go up to -9.75. It was def approx -5.00 before. Saying that I still can't see them being much cheaper than specsavers for a 1.74 lens. And Asda are even cheaper.

I've been pleasantly surprised by Glasses Direct.

I have varifocals, astigmatism, need transitions lenses as am very sensitive to light due to damage in one eye caused by a detached retina and have a high prescription, I do have to pay for some extras like the super thinning and the transitions lenses that react when driving and go as dark as possible but the difference in price was £500 from specsavers down to £160 at Glasses Direct.

@Sookafatwan do you mean Asda in store? Do they have opticians?

Yes Asda are famously (or not) incredibly cheap for people who need lenses thinning, reason being they dont charge you any more, whereas everywhere else charges more for thin/thinner/thinnest etc.

Many Asdas have an Opticians, their websites should tell you. They have a decent range, designer etc. I had a problem with mine and they had no interest in fixing it, but just refunded me instead no issues. Shame but you may have more luck than me. There's also no daft bogofs like Specsavers which is a bit of a con if you only want 1 pair.

My prescription is way higher than any online adverts I've seen, plus astigmatism, a separated retina, glaucoma and a cataract.

DH buys online glasses as back-ups as he's always mislaying his and he needs them for work, and they're much cheaper than Specsavers. However, I will say that Specsavers are great at doing free ad hoc repairs on their own glasses, which is worth something.

I have bought from Glasses Direct. Frames didn’t fit too well but otherwise okay. They’re sunglasses so I’m not so bothered about the loose fit frames as I probably only wear them 3/4 times a year. The prescription is slightly out of date on them but they’re better than nothing.

Unfortunately my daily glasses now have adjustments that I can’t order online so I have to buy mine in store-my optician knows it inside out (something about the central point needing to be lower - I dunno he explained it to me but it made very little sense).

So if your prescription is complicated then no to online, but if it’s straightforward then go for it.

I'm -6.25 /-8 for distance and wear varifocals. I've never had success with online glasses.

Asda, is a nice balance of cost and f2f service.
