You're staying in a holiday let -

Would it bother you if the bed sheets and towels were brand new out of the packet (so not yet used by anyone so far) but still hadn't had a machine wash or iron yet. Literally taken out of the packet and put straight onto the bed and into the bathrooms factory fresh.

If it would bother you - why would it?
If it wouldn't bother you - why wouldnt it?

No wrong or right answers, just curious as this happened to a group of relatives staying in a holiday home recently. Some were quite annoyed by it, others weren't bothered. Some want to knock a star off the review for it, while some of the others think that's out of order.

I'm not part of the group, but it did get me thinking whether it would bother me or not.

Wouldn't bother me in the least.

That said, I once did that with a bottom sheet from John Lewis and my husband ended up in hospital after two weeks of not being able to sleep from horrific itching. (I was fine).

Bridgertonne · 28/06/2024 18:00

It would bother me, I always wash my bedding after purchasing it.

LIZS · 28/06/2024 18:00

I'd prefer them laundered tbh. Towels are more absorbent and feel fresher if so. Sheets less so.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 28/06/2024 18:01

I prefer them laundered as they always seem to have some really weird stiff dressing on them fresh from the packet.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 28/06/2024 18:01

Yes, I’d find that gross.

Is ‘factory fresh’ a thing? In pictures factories look quite grubby.

WonderingWanda · 28/06/2024 18:01

I'd prefer it if they'd had a wash to soften them Nand remove any factory chemicals but it wouldn't ruin my holiday or make me feel the need to complain.

hopeishere · 28/06/2024 18:03

Towels don't absorb properly until they are washed imho.

Caspianberg · 28/06/2024 18:04

I would expect them washed.
If they had been trashed by last guests and were a last minute replacement I wouldn’t mind, but that wouldn’t usually be everything, just a couple of towels

OchonAgusOchonOh · 28/06/2024 18:05

I wouldn't be bothered about the sheets but I would be annoyed about the towels as you need to wash towels first or they just slide off you without drying you. No idea why. I assume it's some chemical from the manufacturing process.

ApolloandDaphne · 28/06/2024 18:05

I hate the factory chemical smell on new sheets and always wash them. I wouldn't be too pleased if they were on my bed in a holiday let.

Topsy44 · 28/06/2024 18:06

It wouldn’t bother me at all that they weren’t washed. In fact I would be quite pleased to know that they were brand new sheets and no one else had slept in them!

orangelotus · 28/06/2024 18:06

I'd love to know they were brand new with me being the first person to use them!!
Do people wash their clothes before wearing them? As others may have tried them on in changing rooms I can see why you might do this but bedclothes , no!

Butteredtoast55 · 28/06/2024 18:07

It would very much bother me because the manufacturing process means that dust, lint and chemicals can linger on the product, and I don't like the smell. I prefer bed linen washed to soften it and towels washed to help absorbancy.

user1471556818 · 28/06/2024 18:12

Well as I turned back the covers to what looked like blood stained sheets at bedtime .No spare sheet in the house .I was delighted when the owner turned up the next day with a complete set of bed linen still in the packets .
I also would have brought a bottle of wine or some flowers tbh

Pineapplemonkey · 28/06/2024 18:12

I love just out of the packet sheets (only high thread count ones mind you, none of this poly cotton awfulness), if I could have a brand new set every time I change the bed I would. It has never entered my head to wash them before using them!

Sookafatwan · 28/06/2024 18:13

Everything needs washing before using.

norasand · 28/06/2024 18:14

It would bother me. Factories are filthy, but mor importantly, I don't want the sleep in the excess chemicals from production. I always wash clothes before wearing too. We once had this in a holiday let when we turned up too late to do anything about it. The sheets felt horrible from the starch and stank. Not nice at all

Hopealong · 28/06/2024 18:17

Yep would definitely bother me. Own and manage a holiday let in Southern Europe and wouldn't dream of doing this

Longma · 28/06/2024 18:18

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest

mooncloud1 · 28/06/2024 18:20

Sookafatwan · 28/06/2024 18:13

Everything needs washing before using.

No, it doesn't.

QuestionableMouse · 28/06/2024 18:21

Yes - I have to wash everything before using it because I've had some horrible reactions.

YellowDaffodilRedTulip · 28/06/2024 18:22

No. I don’t wash new things usually anyway.

mitogoshi · 28/06/2024 18:23

Wouldn't bother me, i would also think that the owner either had an incident with the previous guests or similar so decided to replace at short notice rather than you have staining or whatever, so good on the landlord

Sookafatwan · 28/06/2024 18:24

mooncloud1 · 28/06/2024 18:20

No, it doesn't.

Course it does and the instructions will say so.

SheilaFentiman · 28/06/2024 18:27

I would prefer them laundered but would assume some kind of mix up at the laundry service which meant a last minute dash to buy new ones was the best option.

I certainly wouldn’t knock a star off!
