You're staying in a holiday let -

Would it bother you if the bed sheets and towels were brand new out of the packet (so not yet used by anyone so far) but still hadn't had a machine wash or iron yet. Literally taken out of the packet and put straight onto the bed and into the bathrooms factory fresh.

If it would bother you - why would it?
If it wouldn't bother you - why wouldnt it?

No wrong or right answers, just curious as this happened to a group of relatives staying in a holiday home recently. Some were quite annoyed by it, others weren't bothered. Some want to knock a star off the review for it, while some of the others think that's out of order.

I'm not part of the group, but it did get me thinking whether it would bother me or not.

Wouldn’t bother me. I never wash anything before using it. Don’t see the need

I would prefer them laundered but would assume some kind of mix up at the laundry service which meant a last minute dash to buy new ones was the best option.

I certainly wouldn’t knock a star off!

Neither. I wouldn't like it, but I wouldn't rate them down, because I'd assume a mishap. Although we did have a friend who just supplied cheap new linen in his holiday flat for every let, because it was cheaper than paying the laundry, so not necessarily.

Course it does and the instructions will say so.

Even if it doesn't, a small glimpse behind the scenes of any process involving textiles will make you want to wash anything you put on your body before washing, blergh. Get them in the wash.

pinkpanther84 · 28/06/2024 18:37

I never wash brand new things from the shop so wouldn't bother me and would be happy to be the first person using it!

Violet17 · 28/06/2024 18:45

Would not bother me. Although towels are more absorbent if washed before use.

One holiday let I went to didnt have any towels like they were supposed to. Hours later a man brought some round. I have used better towels as rags. Who gives guests old mismatched towels with holes and stains? This was one of several things I complained about as did not meet the promised basic amenities. The letting was removed from the website shortly after this.

So in view of this new towels and bedding out the packet is absolutely ok.

Bluevelvetsofa · 28/06/2024 18:47

I’d prefer that to the ones we had last year that I’m not at all sure were clean on the bed.

PuppyMonkey · 28/06/2024 18:49

I’ve found they make me cough all night if I don’t wash new sheets first before putting on bed. There’s little fibrous bits that set my chest off. So if I was in a holiday let that had done this, I’d have been coughing all night and wouldn’t be too impressed tbh.

KohlaParasaurus · 28/06/2024 18:49

Fine with me. I don't wash new bedlinen before using it at home.

usernother · 28/06/2024 18:52

I'd prefer it to them being washed. Brand new. Lovely.

Funkyfizz · 28/06/2024 18:53

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Twiglets1 · 28/06/2024 18:54

It wouldn’t bother me because I don’t wash sheets I take out of the packaging anyway

mum11970 · 28/06/2024 18:55

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest

EasterlyDirection · 28/06/2024 19:00

I'd complain, factories are grubby, fabrics are covered in chemicals and unwashed new clothes bring one of my DC out in a rash. We wash all new clothes, towels and bedding before use.

YellowAsteroid · 28/06/2024 19:00

Wouldn't bother me at all! Lovely brand spanking new bed linen!

GameOfJones · 28/06/2024 19:01

I would find it strange, but it wouldn't bother me. I've stayed in some really grotty places with bed sheets stained, or mascara on the pillowcases and it's made me a bit squeamish about hotels etc so I'd probably be quite happy to know that nobody else had used them!

I do think it's a bit odd, but I definitely wouldn't knock a star off the rating because of it.

Sookafatwan · 28/06/2024 19:04

Im guessing its the younger generation that are happy for stuff not to be washed.

mathanxiety · 28/06/2024 19:05

Did you say ironed? Ironed sheets?

The relatives wanted ironed sheets in a holiday rental?

Scampuss · 28/06/2024 19:06

Would bother me a lot.

Fungicides and pesticides are used on textile cargo.

fluffiphlox · 28/06/2024 19:07

The towels will be terrible out of the packet. Totally unabsorbent.

cheezncrackers · 28/06/2024 19:09

It would bother me. I never wear clothes or use towels or sheets or anything that hasn't been washed first.

mondaytosunday · 28/06/2024 22:07

Wouldn't bother me at all.

mondaytosunday · 28/06/2024 22:07

Oh forgot the why. Well I can't think why you'd need to wash them frankly. Waste of energy.

QuestionableMouse · 28/06/2024 22:34

mondaytosunday · 28/06/2024 22:07

Oh forgot the why. Well I can't think why you'd need to wash them frankly. Waste of energy.

Because they can be covered in various chemicals, including pesticides from shipping. Not to mention potential traces of rodent urine and other nasties.

DappledThings · 28/06/2024 22:43

I'd never heard of this washing before use thing until MN. Wouldn't bother me at all.

I've deliberately saved new bedding before for the guest room and put it on the spare bed for guests from the packet. That's a nice thing to do as far as I'm concerned. According to MN I've probably mortally offended said guests.

Bitwindyoutthere · 28/06/2024 22:47

I’d prefer it, would much prefer brand new and not used by anyone else. I live abroad and quite a few friends/family members come to stay. I always buy a new set of bedding and towels for each set of people and don’t wash them first 😬It didn’t cross my mind to do this
