I got plans to move to South Devon from Wiltshire after my parent's go. It would have to be a council house swap, as I can never afford to buy; I'm also autistic.

Whenever I mentioned this to other people, I get all the naysayers whinding me up with comments like:

its expensive in Devon (isn't it everywhere? I'm not so stupid I don't already know that!)

We'll miss you. I have friends, but also a lit of 'false friends' who clearly don't understand my autism.

You won't know anyone seems a favourite. Well I'll get out and ruddy meet people won't I? 😡

I'll lose my benefits, no they will move with me!!

Lastly I tried to explain to a support worker my goals, and she started comparing me up with some silly man I know who's moved to another county. Banging on about how he's still not settled blah blah. I'm not him! Just because he's not satisfied, doesn't mean I am.

I've also been told not to leave it too late, as it apparently gets harder as you get older. Rubbish! I know somone in his 90s who moved, no problems at all.

Salisbury has nothing really to offer me now, It has been transformed from historic market town to God's Waiting Room.

Just want some advice without being judged, thanks.

Don't listen to what other people say.

Do what you feel is right for you. 🙂

Agree with pp. If you want to move, then move. Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Some people are frightened by the idea of change, so they wonder why anyone else would willingly do something they wouldn't want to do. Sounds like it could be a fun adventure!

The only sticking point I can see is relying on a council/HA swap. I only know one person who's ever managed to get one and that was local.

I’m in SH and I’ve swapped more than once and that was across different counties. But it is easier if you’re open to a multi swap. I’m now in my “dream home” but it was a 4 way swap that got me here. Depends how desirable OP’s area/home is. It doesn’t happen overnight, true. But it can work very well. The house I left wasn’t that nice tbh, but it had rtb, which the people moving in really wanted.

Thanks for your messages, I just can't get people to understand I'm being serious. I've stopped discussing it with my cousin as he goes OTT and starts swearing.

I been told now that I could lose my Housing benifit if I move, which I'm really worried about. Seams like I'm trapped by the benifit system. 😢
