Food poisoning question

In Dominican Republic, newly engaged, having a lovely time until 36 hours ago when I started shitting liquid... DP wasn't far behind!

Food poising from a salad buffet in 32 degree heat. Unwise decision I know.

Online advice is a mixture of don't take anti diarrhoea medication to help it pass and take it to help symptoms.

Any advice? It's 31 degrees currently and drinking enough water to replace the fluids lost is a challenge. Doing our best and both fine in ourselves, just can't leave the hotel room and we fly home in a few days so want to enjoy the end of our hols!

Thanks!

You should get yourself to the doctor as it might be amoeba or other bug that needs specific medication (I got it in Nicaragua).

In the meantime, drink some rehydration drinks (Gatorade etc. unless you brought your own) or failing that, water with a bit of salt and a bit of sugar/juice. Plain water won't make any difference.

And yeah, any sort of raw/uncooked salad in Latin America/the Caribbean is a really bad idea, irrespective of the heat...

If you can get hold of any Sprite, that is supposed to be good for helping to prevent dehydration. The drink with sugar in it though, not the sugar-free one with artificial sweeteners.

Thanks for the advice. Same in India. I mean the hygiene is pretty awful in these countries, though of course the heat doesn’t help. I got 3 day food poisoning after India; mostly likely a salad or lassi (fruit drink).

Who would visit these countries?

Obviously you didn’t realise. I hope you get better soon. Good advice from @BananaPalm

@LateLunch seriously? Millions of people live in them and survive....

@verysadpooeync water with sugar and salt if you can't get sprite. No ice.

Plain crisps or plain boiled rice. Banana when you can stomach it.
