Strawberries smelling like dog poop

It is June so we are eating lots of strawberries, mostly from Kent or Essex. They look good, they taste good but...often they carry a miasma. It smells like dog shit.

I have noticed this before with strawberries - you smell them in the supermarket and they smell ok, but then in your kitchen and fridge, until they have been washed and prepared...dog shit.

What is causing this? Is there a way to avoid it? Am I losing my mind?

Could it be the manure that might be round them when they grow?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/06/2024 12:04

But they look clean! And if they are basically coated in manure enough to smell that bad, should they be sold as edible?

That sounds awful! I couldn’t eat them if they smelt like that and would be worried about getting ill.

Im in the SE and currently buying my strawberries from the grower and they smell of strawberry nothing else .

I know what you mean! I think that's just the smell of very fresh strawberries. We get ours directly from a local farm and the whiff is noticeable when the berries are kept in a hot car or in the fridge. However I'm positive they do not use manure for growing and the farm is renowned for their strawberries. I think it's the supermarket berries that have been over treated that lose the smell.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/06/2024 12:15

It seems to disappear when they are washed and sliced, and we have been eating them because this is not a new issue and it has never harmed me before, and my son plagues me to buy them.

I think I will have to steer him back to blueberries though because I got back into the car and thought someone had stood in something but no, it was definitely the strawberries.

It's something to do with a compound they release and confined spaces.

trainedopossum · 28/06/2024 15:36

I believe it's caused by indole which is responsible for that overripe smell as well as the smell of poop.

Unforgettablefire · 28/06/2024 15:57

I've smelled bell peppers that smell of human shit quite a few times.
Apparently they're using human waste as fertiliser in some places 🤢

Twoshoesnewshoes · 28/06/2024 16:04

We have a bumper crop of home grown strawberries this year
they just smell like strawberries

Shock

I've never had this problem with bell peppers, although the pith and seeds do smell up the bin.

Have you checked your fridge properly? Maybe a small terrier snuck in and is doing its business in the punnets Grin

At least I could enjoy strawberries again!

Are you very sensitive to smells generally?

BluebirdBoogie · 28/06/2024 17:03

Does no one call it poo any more? Can't bear the word poop, it just sounds like you're talking to a 3 year old.

Whereas poo conveys a level of adult sophistication and maturity Grin

Let's agree that strawberries have a faecal aroma.

No! I can get the tube every day without being troubled by all the hair smells, bed smells, clothes-dried-indoor smells and general human odours that distress the average mumsnetter.

I thought i was the only one who smells this !!!
I do have the sense of smell of a blood hound though !

Prawncow · 28/06/2024 17:12

Weird. You have a confused nose.

Human waste has been used as fertilizer for centuries! Most of the sewerage in the UK is treated and used in farming.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/06/2024 13:45

I think that's one of those things I want to know with my brain but not with my nose.

Strawberry smell like spew to me

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/06/2024 16:59

I bought more today because they smelled really good. Now there is a very slight garbage note emerging but we're going to eat them quick before the full range of decomposition odours are released.
