Frizzy hair and expensive hair tools

Kat256M · 27/06/2024 14:23

I have long, dyed and sooo much thick hair. Frizz everywhere, especially around my scalp. I hate washing my hair because I look like a lion for a couple of days no matter what I use on them. And they take forever to dry.

I have a toddler, no time to spend on myself and a birthday coming up. Any recommendations on something that will make me feel put together again??

I looked at the shark flex tool thingy, the dyson dryer, dyson straightener, dyson airwrap...all look the same, are very expensive and I don't trust that they help. I just want long, shiny, sleek hair without putting any real effort😁

This thread is going to be expensive for me.

harrys gel

aveda be curly cream

all on the list 😁

Haha I am making a list too! Hopefully it will be worth it🙂

I have both the revlon onestep and the babyliss big hair and found both useless 😁

So many people are recommending them in this thread I started looking into them...maybe it depends on the person? I just want something quick and easy

Sounds like I have similar hair to you too. I find washing and blow drying it at night with the Dyson supersonic helps a lot with sleekness (making sure it’s fully dry before you sleep). Somehow if I blow dry it in the morning and run out for the school run it poofs up again immediately. I also use Olaplex oil which is brilliant and you hardly need any.

Thank you! That sounds feasible. Do you use any other attachments/heat treatments? Or just the hair dryer at night?

I have similar hair and loads of it, it really does have a mind of its own

The best things I have bought by far (and i have used every spray, cream, serum, hair corrector product, straighteners, chemical straighteners) its the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer (its a thick round brush hair dryer) i think it was about £40

I rough dry my hair or leave it to dry overnight (no product) then use the revlon dryer, add a little serum then go over my hair again and its nice and smooth and lasts ... (still get a bit frizzy in damp weather)

I was just going to say the same thing - I have thick hair that goes frizzy - especially with humidity.
I bought the Revlon One Step a while ago and it dries my hair as close as I can get it to a salon blow dry. I also use a serum when my hair is wet to help keep it smooth. It looks lovely for a few days after.

sugarbyebye · 27/06/2024 19:40

my hair is the same, I use the Only Curls products as I CBA to style my hair. Just load it all up and it's not that frizzy. I use the soap bar shampoo and it lasts ages.

They're basically just like using a good hairdryer and roundy brush, like you get in a salon. Only I can never manage a normal hairdryer and roundy brush because I need about 4 arms to do it properly. So having the two in one means it's easier.
The trick is to dry your hair in small sections, and make sure it's properly dry - which usually takes me about 20 mins for my thick hair. I usually try and do it the night before, so I wake up the next morning with smooth, sleek hair.

SoManyBadgers · 27/06/2024 20:25

My hair is wavy. I have tried embracing my hair type, curly girl method etc but it always ends up frizzy and only looks half decent on the first day. Using my Revlon One Step I can easily get smooth hair that lasts for a week (I usually wash my hair weekly).

Photos of my hair left to dry naturally with a ton of defrizzing product and dried using the One Step with Extraordinary Oil and Tresemme heat protect spray. I find Garnier Hair Food really good for conditioning first.

Another vote for the babyliss brush dryer and leave in conditioner first to give it some weight. It stays non frizzy for 2/3 days then I use dry shampoo. The less I wash it the less frizzy it is.

Keratin treatment is what you need. Makes such a difference. Can't recommend highly enough.
I'm South London, if you are too, I can recommend my hairdresser.
Only thing with keratin is when washing your hair you cannot use any salt products but there are plenty of salt free shampoos & conditioners.

When I go on holiday & swim I just coat my hair in a mask, made for keratin treated hair, just like a conditioner.

Honestly, it's like you can wash & go. My hair is half afro.

JustCleaningtheBBQ · 27/06/2024 20:54

I've got both Dysons, the Babyliss Big hair and the Revlon one step in an attempt to find something to handle the fizz. The Revlon is the best. As others have said, dry of with a hairdryer then use it at the end.

Wavy hair is a bugger to get to go sleek.

You're better off trying to work with what you have. But, if you really want sleek hair try Phillip Kingsley Elasticiser. I have curly hair and every now and again fancy a super straight and sleek look. This is the only thing I've ever found to work.

Which product? Deep conditioning mask?

I just use the normal nozzle, pointing down from the roots to the tips in a half baked attempt to copy the way the hairdresser does it over a hairbrush. (which I cannot do properly). You can rotate the nozzle at angles so it’s always blowing down the hair and not at an angle as you move around your head.

I normally oil it the mornings if I end up having to brush it, which defrizzes any fluff created from my brush (I can’t oil the roots as they get greasy).

So good to hear from someone who has tried them all! And to know that the one that worked is not the msot expensive one

Wow your hair looks great there!! We have similar hair, mine are just longer. Do you airdry overnight? I think I make it worse by sleeping with wet hair-I look like a poodle by morning

Personally I love my Babyliss Big Hair.

I know what you're thinking... your hair is big enough already. So is mine. The Big Hair actually smooths it out and calms it down and it ends up looking smaller than before. It's similar to when the hairdresser at the salon blow-dries it with a hairdryer and a circular brush.

It won't make your hair dead straight, but it will give it smooth gentle waves (in my experience).

This, and cool air hairdryer after, smooths and flattens. Bit of oil to tame flyaways.

DailyCake · 27/06/2024 22:07

I've tried ANSWR and it leaves a nasty smell in your hair for about two weeks that washing doesn't remove.
I recently tried COCOCHOCO gold, professional at home. No smell and it was quick and easy to use. I have the Revlon Onestep and love it - I use it after blowdrying hair almost dry. I use Moroccan Oil serum and a heat protector spray.

@user1471462634 hi,do you mind me asking which mask you use for swimming? Thanks!

I swear by keratin treatment,I couldn't live without it now.

iloveroastpotatoes · 27/06/2024 23:34

Thick curly hair here too! Things I've found useful include:
Silicone & sulphate free shampoo & conditioner.
Using a hair mask every other wash.
Use mousse & strong gel on sopping wet hair. Brush through with Denman brush then scrunch briefly.
Wrap hair in cotton t shirt. This made my hair less frizzy than using a microfibre towel.
Partly dry hair with diffuser with my head upside down then air dry.
Scrunch the crunch. Basically scrunching the gel cast once it has dried. I sometimes do this with a little oil.
Refresh curls with a spray bottle of water in the morning and some gel.
Silk pillowcase was a game changer for me. Before that I used a silk cap but it bothered me no end!
I find I only need to wash my hair every 7-10 days.

I use Philip Kingsley Swimcap, water resistant etc. It's around £20 for the smaller tube so expensive but it is good.

GoingUpUpUp · 28/06/2024 06:32

I’ve got the dyson hairdryer. It’s 100x better than the dryer attachment on the airwrap. I’ve used it everyday for the last 7+ years (I think that’s how long I’ve had it!) and it’s still going strong. It does smooth my hair better than my old dryer. Definitely worth the investment.
I also use goldwell oil (which is about £25 a bottle) but I buy 2 a year at most. It takes my hair and leaves it soft

boredybored · 28/06/2024 06:36

Why don't you just wear it wavy? Don't fight the frizz

My hair is curly and if I let it dry without products it's hideous .

I recently made my friends hair wavy/ curly when we were on holiday when she has had frizz all her life . It's just a method you need to learn

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 28/06/2024 06:38

Sounds like we have very similar hair. I have tried curly girl a couple of times, but only really in the summer.
Loreal Steampod has been the only thing other than a keratin blowdry that’s been able to make my frizzy waves straight.
Lasts for days, even in damp weather.
I tend to wash hair evening before and let it dry naturally, to minimise heat use. Then straighten in the morning - by this time it’s looking its most Hagrid! Really quick to straighten as it only needs one pass with the plates.
Love it!
