Frizzy hair and expensive hair tools

Kat256M · 27/06/2024 14:23

I have long, dyed and sooo much thick hair. Frizz everywhere, especially around my scalp. I hate washing my hair because I look like a lion for a couple of days no matter what I use on them. And they take forever to dry.

I have a toddler, no time to spend on myself and a birthday coming up. Any recommendations on something that will make me feel put together again??

I looked at the shark flex tool thingy, the dyson dryer, dyson straightener, dyson airwrap...all look the same, are very expensive and I don't trust that they help. I just want long, shiny, sleek hair without putting any real effort😁

It sounds like you could have wavy or even curly hair. Do you?

What happens if you leave it to dry naturally?

Yes wavy hair! I mostly let it dry naturally overnight, maybe blast it a bit on the next morning. Then hair straighteners. By the time I am at work it looks just so unkept

Ok I have hair which sounds the same. The Dyson airwrap does nothing for me so save your money. The Dyson hairdryer with the smoothing attachment is better. I know they say the airwrap has the same attachment but it doesn’t seem to work as well/it is a different shape.

but really I find products make the biggest difference. Decent shampoo, kerastase hair oil, some new L’Oréal serum (pink one) which has just been released, wow dreamcoat.

i think my hair probably is curly but ive tried curly girl method without much success. My hair is exceptionally wavy but still frizzy. Think Hagrid and I’m not far off. I’m toying with chucking money at Merwave products but it’s about £60. I spend so much money on hair stuff it’s unreal.

Wavy hair is a bugger to get to go sleek.

You're better off trying to work with what you have. But, if you really want sleek hair try Phillip Kingsley Elasticiser. I have curly hair and every now and again fancy a super straight and sleek look. This is the only thing I've ever found to work.

Thank you for the suggestion! I have the kerastase oil too it is great-too bad I can't use it close to my roots.

Also, I am stealing the Hagrid reference, describes me exactly!

I have similar hair and loads of it, it really does have a mind of its own

The best things I have bought by far (and i have used every spray, cream, serum, hair corrector product, straighteners, chemical straighteners) its the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer (its a thick round brush hair dryer) i think it was about £40

I rough dry my hair or leave it to dry overnight (no product) then use the revlon dryer, add a little serum then go over my hair again and its nice and smooth and lasts ... (still get a bit frizzy in damp weather)

Personally I love my Babyliss Big Hair.

I know what you're thinking... your hair is big enough already. So is mine. The Big Hair actually smooths it out and calms it down and it ends up looking smaller than before. It's similar to when the hairdresser at the salon blow-dries it with a hairdryer and a circular brush.

It won't make your hair dead straight, but it will give it smooth gentle waves (in my experience).

Conniethecatapillar · 27/06/2024 14:49

My hair is the same, the bane of my existence!

I can get it straight with ghd's but it takes ages and I can't always be bothered!

I have tried curl cream but I find when it's curly I have to wash it more often. I have seen people recommending wearing a silk head wrap to bed to keep the curls tight but I've not tried it.

Brownhairdontcare · 27/06/2024 14:56

I have super thick hair which naturally waves/friezes and can go curly if encouraged. My advice....

  • serums etc aren't enough. You need proper, hard core product. Harry's gel is my fave - put it on soaking wet hair, scrunch it in. Microfiber towel. When you take the towel off, put a bit more gel in. A little goes a long way! It will dry 'crunchy' but you scrunch your hair when it's dry snf that gets rid of the crunch
  • look after your hair at night - silk pillows, bonnets etc
  • have it cut regularly and well. I've recently gone to shoulder length after a lifetime of long hair and it is SO much easier to manage!

And embrace it!

Aged 50 something, I have finally accepted that my hair is wavy/curly. It will never look sleek. I am working on enhancing my curls instead. And I et far more compliments than I ever did when I was trying to get it smooth!

I have been using Boucleme products for about 6 months now. A smoothing of curl creme through very wet hair followed by some gel. Scrunch and wrap in a microfibre towel and ignore, or diffuse. I always intend to wrap it at night, but usually forget!

UpToonGirl · 27/06/2024 15:43

I have similar hair and have tried to embrace the waves but it never looks great, unless I'm on holiday. I've got the Dyson and I would say the brush attachment is good but not worth the money. The curling attachments are no good for me at all.

Like @HRTQueen I like the Revlon brush as it is easier to get more tension but I only use it on almost dry hair as I'm worried about damage. I also have been using a straightening brush, just a cheapie from Amazon and that's been working well on rough dried hair, although I will admit the results don't last. I've seen wireless versions of the same thing that people use as a touch up through the day.

I recently got fed up with my hair and had it cut shoulder length, just long enough for a claw clip so I only need to blow dry the front section. I suit longer hair much more but I was sick of it taking so long to do and looking crap half the time anyway.

Tibby2024 · 27/06/2024 15:47

Hi I have wavy hair and go to the salon and have brazilian blow drys few times a year makes it less frizzy sleek and so much easier to manage. Abit pricey but worth it even as a treat now and then x

scoobiedew · 27/06/2024 15:59

No advice from me OP. I have short, straight, fine hair with zero body and so am just reading this thread with envy!

pernillas · 27/06/2024 16:04

After 25 years of trying to make my hair smooth with Babyliss Big Hair and Dyson Airwraps and everything in between, I've just leaned in to the curls and it's really transformed my hair. 'Smoothing' just heat damaged/dried it out and I ended up with so much frizz. Now I scrunch in Aveda Be Curly curl cream to soaking wet hair in the shower, keep scrunching, brush through with a bouncecurl brush to make it go into curl clumps and diffuse for five minutes. Zero frizz. Smooth hair. Much less coming out o.

As with a PP I've also had about six inches chopped off it, and that's made a huge difference too. Wish I'd done it years ago!

ItsFuckingBoringFeedingEveryoneUntilYouDie · 27/06/2024 16:29

Another thing i have changed is that I never, ever brush it while dry any more. I have an afro comb which I use in the shower when it is sopping wet. On non-wash days, I have a spray bottle which I use to damp it down and rescrunch. The curls are never quite as good as day one, but because I exercise quite a lot, I struggle to stretch out the wash frequency.

CormorantStrikesBack · 27/06/2024 16:30

This thread is going to be expensive for me.

harrys gel
bounce brush
aveda be curly cream

all on the list 😁

Revlon one step, you can thank me later 🤣

Dry first with the hair dryer then finish off with the One Step.

itwasalittlelikethis · 27/06/2024 17:20

Has anyone with this hair type tried the L'Oréal Steampod straightener. I'm considering it, but it is pricey!!

AGlinnerOfHope · 27/06/2024 17:21

Follow the Charlotte Rich Wavy Hair on FB.

She shows you how to use products that bring out sleek shiny curls rather than fluff.

I haven't had massive success, but my hair is barely wavy unlike yours. The before and after photos are inspirational.

CormorantStrikesBack · 27/06/2024 17:25

I have both the revlon onestep and the babyliss big hair and found both useless 😁

LittleFloatingGhost · 27/06/2024 17:28

Brazilian blow dry!

MissNowt · 27/06/2024 17:39

My dear SD has hair the same as yours OP. Nothing has really worked for her except for a professional keratin treatment. Her hair looks sleek & glossy now. It cost £90 & lasts for three months. She says it's really quick to dry now, used to take her an hour!

I thought about that but it is so expensive and not a one off cost-hard to justify!!
