Help with funeral music please

My Mum’s funeral is soon as we are struggling to find a nice piece of music to be played as people enter the crematorium.
Mum and Dad weren't particularly ‘into’ popular music. they liked shows and musicals, but we don’t want something upbeat for the entry music. Mum was 84.
Any suggestions please?

My MIL requested One day like this by Elbow. I would like to have Dido's lament (When I am laid in earth) from the opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell. However I don't think it would be appreciated by anyone I leave behind.
I am very likely to die within the next ten years, perhaps quite a bit before then, so I really should start thinking about it I suppose.

Gabriel's Oboe from The Mission is beautiful. Also Champions Theme from the film about Bob Champion.
We had Jealous Of The Angels by Nathan Carter at my DPs funeral...

Was she quite patriotic? If so, Nimrod is a lovely piece of music, I used it at DH's funeral.

The Pachelbel Canon in D is beautiful, and also as PP suggested Elgar’s Nimrod

Pachelbel

Elgar

Morning at Seven by James Last Orchestra , it's beautiful piece of music.

DM had Swan Lake as she was brought in; DF had Nimrod. Both left to Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller, which was so lovely I've told DH I'd like it myself.

Faure In paradisum is beautiful, memory from cats if into musicals, lots of Elgar pieces fit the bill, nimrod being the most commonly used. Judy garland version of somewhere over the rainbow?

I chose Everytime We Say Goodbye by Ella Fitzgerald for one family member who loved her. And my beloved aunt had Waterloo Sunset by the Kinks.

Those two songs make me smile and cry at the same time.

Celebrant here... choose something that soothes you. A recent client had mozarts eine kline 4, andante romanze.

Is there something you like?

Another client had Jim reeves "ill never forget you" and it was lovely

MikeRafone · 27/06/2024 12:36

If you want a piece of music to sooth without being heavily emotional, then I’d listen to Debussy

but classical music is very different from shows & musicals

Op what was their first dance?

Apparently they didn’t have a first dance as they had to leave after the wedding breakfast to go to their honeymoon and so the guests partied into the evening without them!

Not sure if you want hymns but

'Here I am Lord' is lovely

That's beautiful🤗

StJamesInfirmary · 22/01/2025 10:17

We played gnossienne no. 1 for my Dad's because he liked Satie. We had three other songs which were a bit more upbeat but this felt suitable calm for a reflective moment when everyone settled ready for the ceremony to start.
So sorry for your loss x
