King or super king bed?

Moving home very soon and would rather not go to the hassle of taking apart and putting back together our double bed frame… plus it will look tiny in our new bedroom!

A double was all we could fit in our new build room and tbh we have managed mostly fine with it but more space would definitely be ideal. We do like to sleep quite close to each other most nights. DH works shifts so for a good 30% of the time it is just one of us in bed.

We have lots of space in our new home and the current owners have had a super king comfortably in the room.

I am in the second trimester expecting our first baby and know we will probably end up with our toddler climbing into our bed in a couple of years time, but still not sure if we’d manage just fine in a king. I imagine bedding for a king size mattress is easier and cheaper to find, for starters!

What would you go for? Need to choose soon so I can order it :-) thank you

superking, we recently upgraded from a double and it is the best thing we've bought in a while, it only just fits in our room but I don't care, we sleep so much better.. plus ours is an ottoman bed and the storage underneath is huge!

We got ours online from Dusk and it's been brilliant.

I think a king size bed would have been fine though to be fair, I wanted to upgrade to king or superking to have the extra length.

The bedding is more expensive to buy, and crucially you can't seem to buy it from normal places like the supermarkets etc, they only go up to king size where we are, the only places I've found it so far are dunelm and ikea.

We upgraded from a double to a superking 4 years ago. DH and I both LOVE our sleep, and we are in agreement that the day the superking arrived was one of the best days of our lives.

The only downside is when you have to sleep in a double again when visiting/travelling it feels like you’re sleeping in a cot on a nuclear sub.

Mangolover123 · 26/06/2024 00:04

Superking everytime.
I use two of the giant towel pegs to help with making the bed, use them to keep the duvet and cover in place while I shake

Dusk bedlinen
They also do long pillows for sk beds.
I love my bed!

Super king if you have the room.

SaltBlossom · 26/06/2024 06:00

Just to report I had the best night's sleep in ages in my new massive bed!

spiderplantmum · 26/06/2024 06:05

Super king. Always super king. The king bedding at IKEA fits super king and they have a massive sale right now!!!

Onemorepenny · 26/06/2024 06:22

Super king!

Roselilly36 · 26/06/2024 06:27

We bought a SK as soon as DS1 arrived, he’s 23 now, we still have a SK sized bed. Best bed size ever.

Mydogisagentleman · 26/06/2024 06:28

We have occasionally had to sleep in a double and wondered why we hadn't upgraded before.
Super king, flat sheets and 2 single duvets

Springwatch123 · 26/06/2024 06:57

King - we find that ‘s plenty of room to have space.

From a practical point of view, I would struggle putting bedding on a super king.

Buy the best mattress you can afford. You won’t regret it.

hby9628 · 26/06/2024 07:33

Bedding isn't too expensive. I tend to get it from dunelm although I got a lovely joules one when it was on sale. They are fine to get on and off
I'd love a coverless duvet but our washing machine isn't big enough for a super king one. Can just about fit my daughters double in there

Willmafrockfit · 26/06/2024 07:35

i woudl get a king size
no point going ott

more cost for sheets etc, less availability
what happens if you move house?

Mayhemmumma · 26/06/2024 07:43

Super king definitely!
I love it on Xmas morning when my kids who are not small now - 10 and 12 can still bundle in to the bed.

Dunelm do Dorma bedding. It is more expensive but the quality is definitely superior. I have one of their sheets for our superking and it is lovely and smooth and the right depth for the mattress.
I also recently got a new duvet cover from Next. Not quite as good as Dorma but it's pretty nice.

greencartbluecart · 26/06/2024 07:56

I slept in a superking for a few nights and did not like the experience - lonely when you are with someone and disoriented when alone

We stuck with the double even though the room is designed for larger we are happy, neither of us is large though

Bedding is easier to manage

greencartbluecart · 26/06/2024 07:58

And no problem on Christmas morning either ! It always makes me laugh people thinking a bigger bed is better for that one day a year - as a child and as a parent squishing in together was the fun of it all!

Sago1 · 26/06/2024 08:00

TKMaxx, Boundary Mill and Brand Alley are where I get most of my Super King bedding from, I always manage a bargain in the sale.

Perzival · 26/06/2024 08:05

I would go for s king with super king bedding. To me the mattress is more important than the difference in sizes. I could have the biggest bed in the world but if the mattress is rubbish I won't be sleeping.

DurhamDurham · 26/06/2024 08:05

We've had super king beds for years and wouldn't ever go back to a double or king size. When we go away anywhere and it's a double it just seems so small and cramped.

Unlike previous poster I never feel 'lonely' when my husband is in the bed, I know he's there, I don't need to feel him breathe on me to know that Grin, I admit it's wasted on a person in it alone. When I'm alone I still just stick to my side, wouldn't occur to me to spread out or go to the middle.

Changing the bed is a struggle that we have to build ourselves up for, it's definitely a two person job putting the duvet cover back on.

RosesAndHellebores · 26/06/2024 08:23

@mateysmum thank you. I haven't seen Dorma for years. I think Debenhams used to stock it. I'll find a Dunelm.

FlyingSoap · 25/06/2024 22:33

Is bedding any more expensive does anyone know?

We have a super king with 2 duvets. Most places sell SK now even Tescos.

Rocknrollstar · 26/06/2024 08:26

We have a king size bed but had a super king on holiday and it was fabulous. Would definitely buy if we had the room

WeAllHaveWings · 26/06/2024 08:27

Super king - great when baby or toddler co sleeps no one needed to decant to another room.

Great when it is really hot, you can move away from each others body heat.

soberfabulous · 26/06/2024 08:27

Super king super king super king!

skilpadde · 26/06/2024 08:32

If you have space, always go for a superking.

If you go for a king, you're spending money on a new bed, mattress and bedding for a mere extra 6 inches of bed width. A superking is 18 inches wider than a double.
