Just sharing my shitty day

First day driving new car. Drove into a post causing £650 worth of damage (to my car, not the post). Drove previous car for 10 years without incident.

At least it's sunny.

@ErrolTheDragon It does have a reversing driver assistance thing but I wasn't reversing at the time so wasn't much help

Yeah, you need all round sensors! Short posts, boulders etc can be out of sight.

FlyingUnderTheRadar · 25/06/2024 18:20

Well it was going to have to get its first dent at some stage so at least that’s done now. If you think about it, it was pretty efficient of you really <clutches at straws>

Haha, yes I did think 'well I've done it now so I can relax'. I would have just left the damage as I don't care what it looks like but apparently it will rust if I don't get it repainted...

Oh no that’s bloody crap!
I drive a few vehicles, one being a massive truck and it’s far easier to manoeuvre than the 2 much smaller cars I can tell you. Much better visibility, bigger mirrors and a reversing camera!

thequeenoftarts · 25/06/2024 18:29

I did exactly the same thing the day I got my new to me car, bloody Hyundai as well lol, I swear that garage wall moved. Hadn't hit it ever in 10 years of driving my old car grrr, but thankfully it was only a scratch and I refuse to admit it to myself hahahaha. Have all the hugs, flowers, chocs and gin you want tonight and be grateful it wasn't a lot worse for you and neither you nor anyone else was hurt, but yeah doh!!

Gnomegarden32 · 25/06/2024 18:29

@TheChosenTwo wow I didn't know that, I thought the smaller the easier

OP posts:
Gnomegarden32 · 25/06/2024 18:31

@thequeenoftarts so weird the same thing happened to you! Yes the first thing I say to myself after things like this is 'it doesn't matter'. No one is hurt after all.

OP posts:
Blouson · 25/06/2024 18:33

Yeah look on the positives side, it was a post not another car when insurance would have had to get involved.

Gnomegarden32 · 25/06/2024 18:33

I was going to call my new car Rochelle but now I think I might change it to something that sounds a bit more hard done by

And this is why I will never again buy a new car, unless I'm rich enough that money is no object. My old car has scrapes on every corner, so if I add a new one I can ignore it and carry on with my day. (It is a fairly regular occurrence) Some people can have nice things. I learned the hard way I'm not one of them. 😀

Gnomegarden32 · 25/06/2024 18:36

@Backtothedungeon It wasn't a new car, just new to me. But it was in very good shape, before today.

OP posts:
Gnomegarden32 · 25/06/2024 18:38

Yeah I would never want to drive a brand new car - too much pressure!

Backtothedungeon · 25/06/2024 18:43

New compared to my 22 year old car. Hopefully your day will improve!

HappiestSleeping · 25/06/2024 18:46

Gnomegarden32 · 25/06/2024 18:15

@HappiestSleeping It's the law of sod. Thinking I should just have gone for an old banger instead because obviously then nothing would have happened.

Exactly right. To be honest, I was very disappointed by the BMW and wouldn't have another, so it was no hardship when the time came to give it back. Fortunately, I didn’t get stung for the damage too badly.

I will also be sticking to the more budget friendly cars that I don't worry about so much.

I find the big truck an absolute doddle to be honest. The other 2 are tiny in comparison and generally just not as nice to drive in (although I do love my Golf, it’s so speedy and nippy!), the big ones have my heart 😂

Gnomegarden32 · 25/06/2024 18:53

@TheChosenTwo maybe I should've bought a truck 😅 Might have stood out a bit on our terraced street but I'd have won the fight with the post

Someone I know bought a brand new Aston Martin Virage many years ago. He horrified the salesman by tapping one of the wheel arches (albeit in a very inconspicuous place) with a hammer as he wanted to be the first person to dent it.

If money ever is no object for you (and I wish you every good fortune), please don't do that, as we all thought he was a complete cock.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 25/06/2024 18:56

I think that cars have got bigger on the outside but not in the inside. It's because they have more protection for passengers now.

I totally agree - much less to worry about with an old car with lots of scratches already. I considered just leaving the damage but apparently you have to get it painted over if you've removed the paintwork to this extent or it rusts 😬

My boss collected her brand new car, reversed off the forecourt and went straight back on it as she reversed in to a bollard 😂

Gnomegarden32 · 25/06/2024 22:56

@ThereIsAMassivePiegeonOnMyFence Omg 😂
