Unknown mobile number calling me

Bumpgrindandgurgle · 25/06/2024 16:42

They called 4 times today in a row.

I answered with "hello". They said nothing and kept silent each time. .I hung up. I then blocked them but then 10 mins later unblocked them as I wanted to know if they continued to call.

I'm worried. Should I be ?

My mobile number is not advertised anywhere. I don't have it on any social media what so ever.

It's just spam, ignore it, they'll get bored.

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/06/2024 16:44

Block and keep number blocked.

TheShellBeach · 25/06/2024 16:44

It's just a scam so don't answer your phone.

Topseyt123 · 25/06/2024 16:45

Why did you unblock them? Block and keep blocked.

blacksax · 25/06/2024 16:46

Why would you be worried?

Look online on Who Called Me. People report scam calls here so you will know if it’s a coo on scam caller

CurbsideProphet · 25/06/2024 16:50

Scammers are sat at computers that dial random numbers repeatedly. You answered and so the computer will know it's a real number and keep dialing, ready for the scammer to tell you that you owe HMRC / have been in an accident etc etc . Just block and ignore

Mindymomo · 25/06/2024 16:50

I rung one back once, asked who they were, they were very aggressive but insisted they hadn’t rung me and said I must need their services, although they couldn’t tell me who they were. Looked up the number on who called me and it showed them as scam phone number so blocked it. Shame as I like to keep them talking, to try and stop them scamming someone else.

blacksax · 25/06/2024 16:50

it's really worried me

Why? There isn't anything to be worried about.

TheShellBeach · 25/06/2024 16:52

There's nothing to worry about though.
Just ignore them.

DatingDinosaur · 25/06/2024 16:54

"I'm worried. Should I be ?"

No. It's just telephone spam. It will be an autodialler voice activated recorded message - that's why nobody says anything when you say 'hello'. FWIW, autodiallers don't need a list of numbers - they just random through 01 02 03 04 05, etc, until they get a connection. It's not even a person.

My landline has been rife with 'suspicious activity on my amazon account' today. Same thing, just on a landline.

WonderingWanda · 25/06/2024 16:59

It will be a computer dialing random numbers and because you answered it will keep calling back and try to connect you with a call centre where someone will be trying to sell you something or scam you. Nothing to worry about, just a nuisance. Block the number and move on.

RedHelenB · 25/06/2024 17:02

Nothing to be worried about. I keep getting random calls over the years for the same person who I've no knowledge of. I've had my phone number for decades.

usernother · 25/06/2024 17:03

What do you think they are going to be able to do? Block them and never ever answer a number you don't recognise. Always Google it and you can usually find out if the are scammers.

rightoguvnor · 25/06/2024 17:07

You could Google the number to see if other people have reported the same issue.
But when this happens to me, I just account for my loved ones (DH in the garden, DS in his room, DD in the kitchen rooting in the cupboard for snacks) and block the number.

YourWinter · 25/06/2024 17:10

I always Google the number. Last few it was my electricity supplier trying to persuade me to make an appointment for a smart meter. I complained via web chat about them pestering and they apologised and credited £30 to my account as a goodwill gesture. Most unknown numbers are just irritating, not menacing.

The new scam ming is to show numbers. Copy and paste it into Google it will tell you who it is. Or just block it and don't worry about it.

NannyR · 25/06/2024 17:12

Something similar happened to me a few weeks ago - I had several unknown numbers call me, no one there when I answered the first one. I googled the numbers and they were random businesses all over the UK - restaurants, garages, shops etc. I just ignored them and they stopped after a day or two

Yes sky was annoying me and I complained it was sales calls that we opted out of.

Boomer55 · 25/06/2024 17:15

Scammers - just block and ignore,

DatingDinosaur · 25/06/2024 17:21

As a general rule of thumb I assume all unknown or withheld numbers are scam/spam. If they're legit, they'll leave a message, send a text/email or write to me.

Look at it like this; if it was really important they'd leave a message. If they don't, it was some spammer taking a long shot.
