Question about poetry

If I write poetry does it matter if I know the correct way or not ? I have no idea about poem structures etc but I just want to write ?

Does it actually matter if it’s randomly structured especially if it’s just for myself ?

I have an MA in writing poetry (get me😀) and whilst I think the SF book is very good, it is more useful when it comes to understanding and writing about poetry than about actually writing it. It might help to understand why something works in a poem you’ve written but it’s probably quite rare for a poet to start writing with the intention of using trochaic tetrameter or whatever.

If you want to read around the subject something like Kate Clanchy’s Grow Your Own Poem will be a good start. It demystifies poetry and gives writing prompts that help new poets to get started.
