House mouse or field mouse? Just caught in my bathroom!

After an amusingly high-pitched squeal from 19yo DS2, we have caught a mouse in our bathroom. Can anyone with experience of the little buggers tell me what kind of mouse it is, and whether it's wandered in from outside or it's likely we have an actual infestation? We have a lot of problems right now and I really could do without a fucking pest control issue 😫

Mouse. Just let it outside and it’ll go home.

Field

downwithmaterialistdogma · 23/06/2024 18:59

Looks like a field mouse to me. House mice have grey underneath and longer tails I think.

sprigatito · 23/06/2024 18:59

Back door has been open all day, and we have cats, so it could easily have come from inside.

So cute! Probably cat brought it in. Think you’ll be grand. Release it far away.

Fuzzy tail and it doesn't have big grey round ears. Wood mouse? Not a house one anyway.

Bythecooker · 23/06/2024 19:02

How did you catch it? They move fast! Field mouse for sure, a lone adventurer I reckon.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/06/2024 19:02

If it has very large eyes, it would be a wood mouse (so a pest controller told me) they tend to come indoors when it gets cold (English Summer). I camptured one with a humane trap and released it 2 miles away in a field. I expect a farmer is cursing me now.

sprigatito · 23/06/2024 19:03

It's an absolutely beautiful little thing. DH is going to release it, but we're not sure how far to take it? Don't want to dump it so far from its family that it just dies!

DH trapped it in a bucket, I'm not sure how!

One minute you hope to not have an infestation. Now, you hope it has a large, extended family!

He's so cute. Give him a name, buy him a car & introduce your DS to his new brother!!

Yes, but out there in the wilds of nature, not in my bloody toilet! I love wild creatures, but I don't necessarily want them creeping over my feet while I'm on the shitter 😂

Probably your cat brought it in?

OriginalFloorboards · 23/06/2024 19:39

These are cute until they are in my house OP. We have an equestrian property and doors are open. An odd one will come in and I literally panic.

I don’t mind them in the fields but my brain says ‘it’s pregnant with 3 million babies’ and defies all logic known to man.

Plus who knew I scream?

When I heard the noise I thought it was my daughter but no. It was me!

I’m perfectly OK with spiders and other things (things covers everything that isn’t a cat, dog or horse!).

Good you caught it and can release.

Goingasteady30 · 23/06/2024 19:40

He's cute. Glad he wasn't caught with a more brutal method.

incessantpunditry · 23/06/2024 19:42

I saw the title of the thread and thought "Hmmm... I wonder if the OP has cats".😂

Darklane · 23/06/2024 19:45

Definitely a field mouse. Don’t take it too far away it’s likely got a nest nearby.
