Help! What works best for a headache?

Started my period yesterday and today I have a banging headache. It’s always the way. I used to just get cramps but now I get headaches as well and they’re hell! Nothing I try will shift them. Today I have tried paracetamol and ibuprofen, and even cocodamol (I didn’t take everything at the same time). I’ve just woke up from a nap and even that hasn’t shifted it. I can’t even get up because when I take my head off the pillow it hurts more.

Has anyone found anything that is effective for bad headaches? Usually they last from day 2 of my period to day 4 or 5 but it’s worse this month and I can’t cope with another few days of this 😔

Or you can try sumatriptan - you need a prescription though.

I think they changed the rules so that you can get it OTC now.

Zolmatriptan is certainly available to buy in Boots.

You won't get sumatriptan over the counter unless you've previously been prescribed it - a pharmacist needs to okay the sale and many places will make you fill out a questionnaire. There's one militant pharmacist near where I work who won't sell it to me despite me having a regular prescription because of another health condition...

This is going to sound weird but try putting your feet in a bowl of hot water. It works for my DD when she gets a migraine.

Much of the above and put your feet in hot water.

Ibuprofen with lysine. Sold in supermarkets as Ibuprofen for migraines, fast acting Ibuprofen and other names. They are 342g as opposed to 200g. If they don't shift it within 20 minutes or so, I take a Sumatriptan.

Can't get naproxen OTC anymore.
Hot water bottle to head helps me

Solpadeine headache in the white box might work , paracetamol with caffeine, they’re soluble so seem to work quickly. Take 2 or one with one cocodamol.

i do agree with seeing the GP... more than likely they will prescribe Amitriptyline.. just a low dose, 10mg. its really good for managing hormone related migraines.

triptans sound a little bit OTT.. and they only work if you take them at the right time, take them too early or too late and you might as well throw them at the wall.

(and yes before anyone jumps on me i am a chronic migraine sufferer)

We're all different - amitriptyline just made me really groggy in the morning. Sumatriptan works and just takes longer to take effect if I don't twig it's a migraine.

I get these too and very little helps. I need to catch it early but often I wake up with it. Tried all sorts. I'm now on hrt which helps a bit as its the hormone drop which causes it I believe.
I find a hot shower, as hot as I can manage right on top of my head. Ice never helps me when I get a period headache. Codeine and naproxen can help but codeine makes me sick sometimes.
Don't miss your coffee if you usually have it. I did that once because I felt sick..caffeine withdrawl plus period headache ain't fun.
