How to deal with just turned 1 year old tantrums?

My DD turned 1 last week. She has always been a very chilled out baby and was generally pretty easy going however the last few weeks she has been getting more and more demanding and now in the last few days it's like she's having real tantrums. She screams and screams if she wants something, sometimes it's things I can give her and sometimes things that I can't. She has started talking a bit and will sometimes say 'I want it' or 'this' but doesn't know or can't say the word for the item, she will point though. I don't know how best to deal with it. If my older toddler starts to get upset for something for something I will model asking for it calmly and she repeats and then I'll give her it (if it's something she can have/appropriate time etc), but with my 1 year old, she can't do that. I don't want to reinforce screaming and crying being how she gets something but also she's just turned one and if she's crying my natural response is to want to give her the thing that will stop it.

My other toddler is 2yrs 9 months and she was the opposite, cried and cried as a baby but once she hit one she was so chilled and easy to please. She didn't have any tantrums until she was almost 2 1/2 so they were much easier to address by then.

Any suggestions /experience/advice?
