Hi, please any advice or help? Sorry for the long post. So just after my son turned 1 in March I rang up the job centre for some help to get back into part time work as I’m struggling a single mam of 2 and would love to get back into work. I spoke with someone over the phone and he said it’s not mandatory for me to look for work with my child being that age but he will help me and sign me to a work coach and if I wanted to change my mind ect I didn’t have to do it, so he sighed me to a work coach I asked for a appointment to discuss more about working ect, they give me a appointment by telephone on 15/05 and cancelled my appointment a day before and rearranged it to another date. So the date arrived for my rearranged appointment and I automatically thought it was going to be by telephone with the first one they cancelled was by telephone I was waiting by my phone and didn't receive no phone call so I logged into my UC account to double check I had the date right and realised i was meant attend the job centre for this appointment so I left a message straight away explaining of my mistake and I was sorry ect explained I thought it was a telephone appointment and if I could rearrange I heard nothing back in my journal and on the 17/06 I checked my journal to see if there had been anything posted about jobs or anymore appointments ect to notice I had been giving a sanction not long after the missed appointment with no response to my message I had left for the reason I had missed my appointment. I haven’t been receiving text notifications that’s why I had not realised I had a sanction on my claim so I have lost £464 so far, I rang uc and had to have a telephone appointment to end my sanction, I asked them if there is anything I could do and they said I had a sanction as my reason for missing the appointment wasn’t good enough, they have sent over a mandatory reconsideration for me but I do think I won’t get that as the successful rate for that isn’t very high, I explained that it’s not mandatory for me to do work search or appointments or anything as my son is 1 and that’s what I got told I went to them and asked for help it’s something I asked for and she wrote this down and sent it away to the case manager, I’m just stuck is there anything I can do about this I feel like I’ve gone to uc for help for work and I’ve ended up with a sanction over a genuine mistake:( I wish I hadn’t gone to them for help and looked for my own work.

Hi. Typical UC!! My husband was working full time but as self employed had to attend some interview to show how he looks for contracts in construction. He too thought it was a phone interview ((not in person) as had been previously. We had a sanction too but I raised hell as said it was stupid to keep having these interviews when at no time has he been out of work - we were only claiming a small amount as I was at home with baby too. They had to consider it but did agree in the end and removed sanction. In your case as you asked for help it should be removed too. If they don't -ask to escalate complaint to a manager i would be amazed if they didn't remove it - someone will see sense. Just keep telling them you don't have to look for work - point out the obvious in your journal I think they are so busy they don't always read them properly. Hope you get it sorted . Let us know if you need more help !
