Do you lock your car?

starostaa · 21/06/2024 20:41

Come home to find out a few burglaries on streets close to me, of cars that were all unlocked.

Seems really common to just leave your car? It’s just ingrained in me to lock it.

Alway lock.it.

Autumn1990 · 21/06/2024 20:47

i do at night but we are quite a long way off the road
When I have lived on a normal street it’s locked unless I’m with the car

YellowRollercoaster · 21/06/2024 20:48

Not deliberately. Especially if I have anything of value in it.

I did have a car that didn't lock very well once, so I used to leave that one unlocked. I didn't leave valuables in it though, and the car wouldn't have been worth stealing.

Lots of cars these days lock automatically when the key isn't near though now don't they, so I am also surprised so many near you were stolen from.

mindutopia · 21/06/2024 20:48

At home honestly, no. We live on a farm at the end of a bumpy farm lane with no near neighbours and if ever anyone was to come down here to nick something, it’s not going to be my shit Skoda they take. It’s going to be tools or farm machinery. If I go other places, like to the supermarket, yes, I do. But honestly, I don’t lock it at home and I never have.

Goingasteady30 · 21/06/2024 20:49

The car lock is there for a reason. It's odd not to lock your car. I'm actually a bit anxious over it and often go back to the car to make sure it's locked because I wonder if I actually did lock it 😆

2Old2Tango · 21/06/2024 20:49

Yes I always lock it when it's not being used. Can't trust anyone these days. Not sure my insurance would pay out if anything was nicked and the car had been left unsecured.

daisychain01 · 21/06/2024 20:51

Car Insurance would be invalidated it you don't bother to lock it.

WolfFoxHare · 21/06/2024 20:52

It’s not exactly hard work to lock your car, is it? Just press a button on the key for the vast vast majority of cars these days. So why on earth would you not?

VolvoFan · 21/06/2024 20:52

Always locked, unless it's being driven, although, I wouldn't say no to locking it even when it's being driven. This is all a direct consequence of living in a low trust society. You can't trust anybody now.

Laiste · 21/06/2024 20:53

Mine locks itself as soon as i turn my bloody back after a few minutes of inaction.

Previous cars, yes always locked them.

Littletreefrog · 21/06/2024 20:54

Apart from if you are in and out with shopping or landing the car I cant see a reason to leave it unlocked. Even if you live in the middle of nowhere there is no harm in locking it, it probably takes less than a second.

AmelieTaylor · 21/06/2024 20:55

Daft not to, even in the sticks. It takes 2 seconds and invalidates insurance if you don't.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 21/06/2024 20:56

Always lock it. An app on my phone tells me if it’s unlocked. Which is usually when DH is parked somewhere waiting to pick up DC. There’s a lot of ‘are you with the car??’ messages from me!

bumbledeedum · 21/06/2024 20:59

Have people said they left them unlocked? There's been a lot of thefts from cars around here recently and rumour is it's people with scanners that can pick up the key code from inside the house and unlock the car remotely. (I do not know how true this is, just the current rumour in my area but would make sense as most people haven't remembered leaving their cars unlocked/wouldn't normally).

afaloren · 21/06/2024 21:01

Always. Someone I know had their car stolen when they got out to lock a gate behind them. Always lock and put key back in faraday pouch.

ClonedSquare · 21/06/2024 21:03

I often forget to lock it during the day, as I'm often back and forth a few times when I get home (toddler, various things from the boot etc). If I'm just going straight in, I lock it every time.

I always lock it at night though and would be more careful if we lived in a busy/dodgy area or had a different house layout (car is parked literally two feet from our front window).

LilianaVikavanovich · 21/06/2024 21:06

If I’m at home no
When we go away , yes
We live in the middle of nowhere though

Landing the car? I think this is my new favourite phrase!

Theraffarian · 21/06/2024 21:12

Always lock it , but if I did forget it would lock itself anyway . Kind of hard to forget as it flashes its lights while it locks and the wing mirrors fold in .

A friend had belongings stolen from their car , they had left it unlocked and you could see the person going down the road trying all the cars with sticking out wing mirrors , so I guess when they are folded in , it’s a given the car is locked and alarmed .

Runnerinthenight · 21/06/2024 21:21

Anal about locking it.

Citrusandginger · 21/06/2024 21:25

Are you sure the cars weren't locked though? We have had issues in our village with thieves using signal blockers / boosters (the technology confuses me) to steal cars to order. We don't have keyless cars but now keep our car keys in a metal box at the back of the house.

Babbahabba · 21/06/2024 21:26

I don't bother at home during the day. Believe me, no one would bother stealing my car & there's nothing of value in it but I do lock it at night/leaving it other places.

Years ago I drove an old car and it was always getting broken into. There was never anything left in it to steal, but they’d crowbar the door open. Eventually I’d leave it unlocked so they could just look inside without damaging it.

Once I got a new car I always locked it.

hjlm · 21/06/2024 21:27

Never. Or my house, in fact that doesn't even have a key

Aussieland · 21/06/2024 21:30

Always (unless I forget but my car is parked somewhere no one would break in anyway)
The only time I might not is having lived somewhere so high risk for theft they suggested leaving the door unlocked so people could just help themselves to anything without causing damage 😂 Some people even left windows down to help (and of course nothing worth stealing)
