Neck dissection for cancer

Sorry to post on here but thought I might get a better chance of a reply. My husband was diagnosed with throat cancer caused by hpv virus in January. He bravely went thorough 6 weeks of radiotherapy and chemo. He is 10 weeks post treatment and his neck lump is still enlarged and oncologist thinks the radiotherapy may not have done it’s job but we won’t know until he has a PET scan in 2weeks time as lymph nodes sometimes take a while to go down. He may need a neck dissection but I’m so worried that cancer may not be contained in the node. Just wondering if anyone has a personal experience please.

No personal experience although I do have cancer myself.
I did want to say you might want to watch Super Surgeons on Channel 4 as in a recent episode a chap had an enormous neck tumour removed successfully at The Royal Marsden.

Also another viewing suggestion
Rhodri Gilbert A pain in the neck documentary again on channel 4.
Very best wishes to you and your husband

Thanks @Blackcats7. I’ve watched Rhod Gilbert’s documentary. It was a hard watch but he does the programme very well and highlights how very brutal the treatment is. I will try and watch the super surgeons.

@Parentworry I am ok cancer wise actually (touchwood). It’s my other health conditions which are a bugger! But thank you. My cancer started in 2013 and became stage 4 in 2019. Please tell your husband that there are plenty of us keeping on keeping on and he is not alone.

My mum is currently in hospital (coming home tomorrow) after having a neck dissection for a necrotic lymph node following a diagnosis of tongue and tonsil cancer. The swollen lymph node was the first symptom. She had her first op to remove the cancer in October and then this to get a wider margin and neck dissection. All the cancer was contained within the node. It had not spread anywhere else in the body and they are now happy they have got all the cancer. As she is over 70, they dont do chemotherapy on head and neck cancers. She may need a short course of radiotherapy but she will be free of cancer. Its not been easy, in fact the neck dissection was the easiest part - she has 20+ staples from behind her ear to her chiin and some droopiness to the eye from nerve damage but she'd have been home much earlier had she not had more throat surgery and now has a naso gastric tube for feeding as she is having trouble swallowing still - no Christmas dinner for her - but they are working to remove that in the new year. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.
