What's with everyone writing 'Mom?'

Ottersmith · 20/06/2024 23:33

Why is everyone writing Mom in their thread instead of 'mum'? Are you American? Are you from the Midlands? If neither of these then stop doing it. It's everywhere and it's so annoying.

OP posts:

Some parts of the UK use Mom (midlands?) but not much of it afaik. I dislike Mama more

NuffSaidSam · 20/06/2024 23:35

Presumably because they're from somewhere that uses that spelling?

It seems blindingly obvious.

Topseyt123 · 20/06/2024 23:36

Does it matter?

I used "mum" but couldn't give a shit about others using "mom" instead.

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 20/06/2024 23:38

🙄 I've been calling her mom for over 60 years, not going to stop now. I'm not American, living in America or from the midlands. What's got you so riled up over a word ?

sparkleowl · 20/06/2024 23:42

Interesting, I’ve never heard anyone call their Mother Mom or Mama come to that.
Not that I mind if they do.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 20/06/2024 23:47

I think a lot of Americanisms are becoming more prevalent. I just saw a thread where the first post talked about a "Doozy", whatever that is.

Watercoloursky · 20/06/2024 23:47

I call my mum Műtti. I'm not German. It started as a joke when I was studying the language in year 9 and just stuck. I really can't get excited about what other people call their mums...

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 20/06/2024 23:54

I used 'Mam' for my mother. My children regularly used to hear me use the term.

My children use 'mum' - or 'mother' if they're cross with me Grin 'mummy' if they want something.

Imtheotherguy · 20/06/2024 23:58

Mine is Mothership or Old Goat. Or Bog Troll 🤷‍♀️

EvangelistaSister · 21/06/2024 00:01

It annoys me too. I have never ever heard anyone use it in real life.

Summertimer · 21/06/2024 00:02

It’s the same as ‘high school’, most real people say secondary school or senior school

stressedespresso · 21/06/2024 00:04

You obviously haven’t got much going on in your life if this is a pressing issue to you 🙄

FWIW I’m Irish. Mom is normal here. Sounds much nicer than mum, it’s horrible.

WrenNatsworthy · 21/06/2024 00:07

Brummie and proud, bab.

gano · 21/06/2024 00:11

Brummie and proud, bab.

Same!

Notonthestairs · 21/06/2024 00:11

Standard spelling & pronunciation from Brum.

(This must be the bi annual 'Mom' thread - prepare for West Midlanders to put you straight).

OnTheRightSideOfGeography · 21/06/2024 00:12

How does it actually make any difference to you if they refer to their mothers as 'mum', 'mom', 'mam' - or even 'mim' or 'mem' for that matter, should anybody do that?

Do you also rail at JoJo & GranGran on CBeebies, because 'just one Gran will be sufficient, thank you'?!

Marblessolveeverything · 21/06/2024 00:12

Now obviously you didn't learn this in school. But we teach three year olds that people can use whatever title for their parents they wish, and we don't judge or comment.

Sorry you obviously were failed in the education system somewhere along the line.

DreamDictionary · 21/06/2024 00:13

Do Brummies also spell ‘tub’ ‘tob’ or ‘luck’ ‘lock’ or ‘scrub’ ‘scrob’?

If not, why do they spell mum mom? It’s the American spelling.

With a side order of high school.

It's a term of affection, that will vary from person to person, family to family.

The others are just standard nouns or verbs that apply to common things and actions, not to people with whom you have a close personal relationship.

Tedious and done to death on MN. Dialects exist. My Mum is Mam, usually me Mam.

Beenthereagainandagain · 21/06/2024 00:18

My mom is a brummie too
