New car smells of cigarette smoke

My new (to me) car is fab and shiny and lovely. BUT now that the valeting air-freshener smell has faded it smells like an ashtray 🙁

Any ideas how to fix?

Bicarbonate of soda absorbs smells, sprinkle it over the carpets and upholstery and leave it to absorb the smell and then vacuum up, repeat if necessary.

I got a car and there was an underlying smell of dog. I sprinkled DoTerra oils about the place every day for a week and it’s gone now.
I also hear coffee granules can soak up a smell.

Stow some prawns under the floor mats. In a few days, you'll be longing for the smell of cigarette smoke 😃

Bicarb is brilliant for soaking up smells

Sounds weird - but cut an onion in half and leave overnight.

How long have you had it? This happened to me and I kicked up a fuss and eventually I sent it back to the dealer and got a refund. If not, you can get a full valet and air con recycle that should get the smell out again for a while.

Almost impossible to remove. DH bought a car, smelled fine when we got it, then the sun came out and it stank, ok on a cool day but in the summer it was foul. We tried everything. Got rid of the car in the end.

We had a car , that once obviously had belonged to a heavy smoker. Every once in a while , it would release some of the smell. I was the only one who could smell it.

It didn't really bother me though.

Thanks all. The dealership is picking it up and going to flush something and replace filters and other things.

They have jumped into action when I complained so that's something.

Update is case anyone is interested:

Car has been deep cleaned and fully detailed and odour bombed (whatever that is) but it still smells so the dealer is finding me another.

It should be a disclosable thing like mileage / service history etc I believe because it seriously impacts the car. Once the fresh cleaning smell faded it was actually unpleasant to sit in never mind do long journeys in.

I agree. The car DH bought was horrible. On a cold day it wasn’t so noticeable, but on a hot day it was like sitting in an ashtray. It should affect the resale value of the car. Plus I didn’t want my toddler breathing it in. I’m so glad you have got a good resolution from the dealership.
