How did you learn to swim?

I learned to swim as a child and guess how? I couldn’t swim and hated whenever water went up my nose, the pain! I used to swim wearing inflatable armbands or a rubber ring around my waist/chest but one day, I forgot to wear my inflated rubber ring. I just walked straight into the public swimming pool without my inflated rubber ring and started swimming around as normal like a pro🤣🤣, close to the edge of the pool when I noticed a lightness around my waist. At first I was horrified and scared as the realisation set in but these feelings were soon followed by excitement, happiness and pride. I shoutied over to my friend “look, look, I forgot my swimming ring and I’m swimming without it! I can swim, I can swim!” This is totally true!

if you want to learn to swim, take swimming lessons, you will succeed. Once you learn it’s like riding a bIke, you never forget how to do it.

I even swam for my secondary school, won and received a trophy. I used to take my son swimming and go with my friends but I only swim now when I go on my holidays but I will try to start visiting my local Swimming Pool soon. I love swimming.

We lived near the sea, so in the sea. Great way to learn as the salt is good for you and provides more buoyancy.

Regarding your final sentence, could we be related? 😀

My Dad did lots of those things after throwing me in and fostered an enormous love of swimming that has stayed with me to this day and has given me a career that I love.

My Dad was THE BEST….fight ya 😂

how about we agree to shake on it!!?

my Dad died 15 years ago & I miss him every day. I never had at a career in swimming but loved it all my life! I'm exceptionally grateful we had two such fab Dads ❤️❤️

Certainly! My Dad died 14 years ago and as well as the swimming I can’t pick up tin foil without thinking of the tin foil animals he used to make me.
Yep we had amazing Dads ❤️

😬
Seen some absolutely horrendous instructional YouTube swimming videos. Some of them have made me ashamed to be a teacher and to have trained swimming teachers.
You must done really well with your selections.

Bit late here, but do you have any recommendations for good videos?

Can swim quite well but need improved technique, I'm pretty slow

Yes, I can dig out something and if needed add something to it. Sometimes you find excellent videos with awful teaching points🤷‍♀️

Can you let me know what specifically you want to improve?
Speed will come as your technique improves and I tell everyone to work on their body position.
Push and glide! Yay!
Don't worry if there are a few things you want advice with on different strokes, happy to hunt things out, just let me know what you are looking for.
Work have somehow managed to lose my bank details between where I work and payroll🙄
Im a bit hacked off with them and may say my availability is less than it is…. I have time on my hands😀

I don't remember the moment when I could swim, but I know it wasn't an easy process and I changed pools twice.

My mum used to pay me 2p a go for jumping in :)

Sandwichgen · 21/01/2025 18:16

Mum taught me by encouraging me to launch
myself at her and thrash my way to her ; at first only a couple of feet away and then a bit further every time

style came later

I taught both dcs to walk and to swim using the same technique !
