What do you do in the evening?

I have realised that I actually have a bit of time to myself in the evenings now, the children are older primary and so go to bed later. I can finish work, have dinner and spend time with them, then have some time whilst they are doing their thing. But I don’t know what to do- I have forgotten how to spend free time! Have you any inspiration?

Exercise ?

What have you always wanted to be able to do or live doing as a child ( paint, play guitar, sing, knit, jigsaws , reading , learn a language ....)

Whatever I want really. Kids are older now so sort of have time to ourselves in the evening inbetween bedtime for ds.
I tend to either go for a walk/swim, (Monday night ds and I do gym and swim together), read, catch up on personal admin stuff, shop for a birthday present, cook, see friends/family, or just enjoy hanging out with the kids. Dh spends the evening cooking for us 😂
we don’t eat our evening meal until about 8ish so plenty of time between finishing work and dinner to make the most of.

Gardening? Invite a friend round for a cup of tea? Journal? Call someone?
I would 100% choose something that feels like rest/ relaxation for you. You deserve it for getting to this point!

Following!

Gym, swim, watch telly, catch up with friends, or lie on the sofa with my cat. Depends how I’m feeling really.

I'm usually pretty tired on weekday evenings. During winter after we've eaten on the nights I don't go out for a run I usually have a shower or bath and just watch TV, read or browse mumsnet.
In the summer if the weather's nice I take the dog for a walk on the beach, go for a run or sometimes meet up with friends for tea.
As a family we usually watch something together in the evening before the kids go to bed - currently it's Young Sheldon on Netflix.

I come home from work and my night goes:

  1. Open patio door so cats can go out into the catio.
  1. Clear the shits from the litter boxes.
  1. Give cats treats.
  1. Shower or bath.
  1. Cook tea.
  1. Put a load of washing on if I have the energy.
  1. Eat tea.
  1. Try and keep the eyes open to watch TV/read/diamond art.
  1. Bed.
  1. 05.30 get up for work and start again.

My kids are now 22, 19 and forever 10. I just don't have the energy any more!

aloha90210 · 19/06/2024 18:59

Gym 3/4 times a week after work, dinner and then try to be in bed by 10pm as I'm exhausted!

Droolylabradors · 19/06/2024 19:04

Go to bed! By the time I've finished work, collected the DC from the school bus at 6.30, made everyone food, laundry, prepped for work next day, I'm utterly exhausted and go to bed as close to 8.30 as I can, even in the summer.

I remember my mum going to 'keep fit' or night classes when I was growing up.

I couldn't exercise in the evenings if you paid me 😳

Yoghurtget · 19/06/2024 19:04

Thanks everyone- exercise seems to be popular and I admit I have got into bad habits with that but might look around.

Think about how early I can get away with going to bed. Bloody shattered for some reason. Up at 5:30 every weekday so 9pm is my bedtime, if not earlier.

Beezknees · 19/06/2024 19:06

Telly, gym, read. I don't really do anything exciting in the week. Currently watching the footie.

GigiAnnna · 19/06/2024 19:09

Have a bath, watch TV, read a book, drink wine/ tea, sit and talk to my husband. I'm boring.

Yoghurtget · 19/06/2024 19:12

I am quite boring too and did mainly fall asleep! Surprised by this new energy. These are all good ideas (and the normal ones make me feel better too as that’s just what I am doing)
