Ramipril and alcohol

I’m 55 and been prescribed ramipril and Amlodipine for high blood pressure. Does this mean I have to avoid alcohol till I see how it goes…or forever?

I take both of those together and still drink socially, it's never affected me. I didn't realise I wasn't supposed to drink tbh !

CalicoPusscat · 18/06/2024 21:08

What does it say in the pamphlet?

BigDahliaFan · 18/06/2024 21:08

Ooh that’s hopeful….

It doesn’t mention it in the pamphlet but does on the nhs website. The pamphlet is terrifying as these things are…

Yes if you read the side effects it's like urrrgh!

PeacockHat · 18/06/2024 21:11

I've been on Ramipril for years, and I was on Amlodipine too (changed to Indapamide a few years ago). Like monicagellerbing said, I've drank alcohol whilst taking them too and I'm still here to tell the tale!

Dottiethekangaroo · 18/06/2024 21:12

I am on both of these too. I don’t think they are affected by moderate alcohol. I did have really swollen feet though once I started the Amiopidine

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 18/06/2024 21:15

I take both Ramipril and Amlopidine since 2018 and I'm more than partial to a glass or several of wine. I also have a yearly medication and blood check when the practice nurse asks me about how much I drink and I've never been told not to because I'm on those drugs.

BigDahliaFan · 18/06/2024 21:23

I’m on 10mg Amlodipine an my ankles are swelling (and other stuff) hence move to less Amlodipine and Half and half.

I’ve got a weekend away and was wondering whether to put the change off till I came back. Should have asked the gp really.

What I did find with starting Ramipril was how very lethargic I was for a few days - had to drag myself upstairs by the banisters. That wore off after a few days. That and the cough I had for a few weeks (a well known side effect) were a pain.

Haribosweets · 18/06/2024 21:57

I'm on both ramipril and ampolidine 10mg each and have done since 2019. I drink alcohol when socialising and lots of it! No effects for me at all

PeacockHat · 19/06/2024 19:49

I got to the point that I couldn't cope with the ankle swelling or the gum swelling. I spoke to my GP and he switched me from Amlodipine to Indapamide and it's SO much better.

BigDahliaFan · 19/06/2024 20:32

@PeacockHat GP said to comeback if this combo doesn’t work out.

I decided to test this out and had a cider this evening (practical experimentation on a willing subject and all that).

Absolutely fine, no effects whatsoever (well, apart from loafing in front of the TV instead of doing some emailing I meant to do).
