Things that choke you up

I choke up when I see an ambulance pass by and the traffic moves, letting it pass.

Something about humans recognising for a second that they have to stop and help for the greater good.

Video clips of completely wild animals finding themselves in life threatening situations who ignore their instinct and ask for help from humans…saw a video of a wolf that had fallen through ice many years ago and after being pursued by rescuers in a dinghy for absolutely ages he suddenly turned and swam to them, obviously having weighed up his chances of survival bs death…i can’t even relate this tale without sobbing

howonearthdoesithappen · 18/06/2024 22:08

I choke up at exactly the same thing op, can't really think of any other things that have that same effect, how weird

Lovelyview · 18/06/2024 22:18

A child singing a beautiful solo at a school concert. People being kind when someone's fallen over in the street. Reading The Snail and the Whale aloud to my children when they were little. Lots of films - my daughter and I sobbed continuously through most of Inside Out. I well up a bit at parents evenings when the teachers are saying how lovely my kids are to have in their class.

Sageyboots · 18/06/2024 22:27

The velveteen rabbit

Pozz · 18/06/2024 22:35

Most of these tbh

Since having children, I was way less emotional before.

Anything to do with animals and children will get me. Also when people are kind.

When I think about the days to come when all our dc have grown up and moved out.
Just typing it chokes me up.

The pandemic. I'm still very moved by all the loss of life, the Long Covid victims still suffering today, the plans that were shattered, the heroism of health workers, the stoicism of all the 'key workers' who just had to keep going, and the small kindnesses of people everywhere. It's left big scars on society and I'm sad that we don't acknowledge this.

I don't cry (antidepressants) but Breathtaking squeezed a few tears out.

Yes it still gives me a lump in my throat even now

Reminds me of having to shield for 18 months when all I wanted was to get out there and help. I saw what was happening in Italy to normal healthy people and would then look at my husband with his chronic health condition and no immune system. I have massive guilt that although I became a drop off point in our community for the food bank I never actively did anything to help.

When military personnel return from a tour of duty and their partners/children run into their arms. The relief they must feel after months of worry. Especially when a dad meets his baby for the first time and it’s already a few months old 😭
When an elderly patient tells me they’re not coping since their partner died 😭
Medal ceremonies at olympics when the national anthem plays (only ours tho!) 😭
I was old when I became a mum, had a planned section and remember the feeling when I was getting pushed in my bed back to the ward with DD asleep in my arms of ‘I’ve done it’ Thinking of my utter contentment in that moment makes me 😭

On the subject of ambulances, the church I went to growing up if the vicar heard a siren whatever he was doing in the service he’d stop instantly and say a quick prayer for those involved before carrying on. Always remember this and do it myself now

Babycatsmummy · 18/06/2024 23:09

I recently watched the film One Life with Anthony Hopkins as the young broker from London who saved the lives of hundreds of children during WW2. I've always gotten emotional since watching Schindlers Lost many years ago about the holocaust but this film touched my heart so much. So many innocent lives lost, but so many saved by this incredible young man. I get emotional just thinking about it all

Strawberryicecream88 · 18/06/2024 23:27

Beautiful sunsets set me off
Coming across photos of loved ones no longer with us
Also finding old birthday cards from people no longer here

Babyghirl · 18/06/2024 23:28

When I look at my 19 month old babyghirl, after 4 miscarriages I never thought I would be where I am now, she's my wee miracle ♥️

MaidOfAle · 19/06/2024 00:15
  • The entire second act of Madama Butterfly, even the first time I watched it, because I could see what was coming.
  • Every time I remember that DCat will predecease me.

At my Mum’s funeral after a rotten battle with a long-term illness my elderly Dad had written a little sign and put it in the car with the flowers - it said “peace my love” - tipped me over the edge and still does over 10 years later. Never seen such a devoted couple.

@Ratfinkstinkypink I'm so sorry.
Your post puts everything into perspective ❤️

It's in the rules of the road isn't it that you're supposed to pull over if it's safe to do so...well it is in Ireland anyway.

LadyHavelockVetinari · 19/06/2024 00:58

I'm very stoic - have never cried at a film, for example. But God the song Puff the magic dragon has me in floods of tears, even thinking about it.

charabang · 19/06/2024 01:02

Passing cattle transporters on the motorway and seeing all the cows and sheep looking back at me. Similarly, passing an empty transporter and wondering what happened to the livestock.

Other people getting tearful. It's like my tear ducts come out in sympathy

Me too!

One from a kid/teen

When a character died in Neighbours, they played the piano version of the theme song “aka sad theme” https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G6UGfeNp2XE when Helen Daniels died. Nice touch of no credits either

Yeah I remember that. Also when Shane died in Home & Away on their anniversary picnic. They were playing that song ‘Throw your arms around me’. Oh my god the tears!

AutumnLeaves1990 · 19/06/2024 09:21

You don't tend to see them now but when you hear a Hare Krishna group chanting/smell of insense before you see them coming down the street. Just thinking about it makes me 🥹

Auburngal · 19/06/2024 12:28

When my Nanan moved into the care home for what turned out to be her last 15 months of her life, my parents cleared out her bungalow (housing association) and found various things with my late grandad’s writing on. He died almost 15 years before. Plus he wasn’t able to write much since his strokes 4 years prior.

waddlemyway · 19/06/2024 18:27

Oo oo ooh thought of another good one as I was falling asleep last night and just remembered it now. … The photos (now often videos) of when siblings meet their newborn sibling for the first time. Love ‘em! Don’t know why, maybe coz I’m an only child. Such a special moment. Even strangers’ pictures get me all welled up.
