Why do we use these terms we never used to. It pisses me of. When it's mentioned on a post I have to look it up. I forget 10 mins later and have to look again. Yes I know that's a me problem. But still pisses me off 😬

It’s just like the cis thing, it’s made up nonsense.

Well I was referring to myself and my peers as Gen X all back when I was a teenager, which, because I’m Gen X, wasn’t that recent! So it isn’t that new.

I have never heard of it until recently

I wonder where that Gen X comes from? I’ve certainly never heard of a Gen V or W or any other earlier letters of the alphabet

That's not actually the fault of people who've been using the term for decades. Were we meant to come round to your house and explain it to you personally? And if you had heard the terms twenty years ago would they now be legitimate, as opposed to hideous neologisms?

The Wikipedia entry says it's really murky. The phrase comes from Billy Idol/the Douglas Coupland novel, and it gradually got attached to the post-Boom generation without a name: a cool name with no meaning got attached to a category with no name.

Gen X has been used, certainly in popular culture, for decades.

No need for a ott fuss I said it pisses me off . I also said I forget the meaning very quickly and I have to look it up again and again. I said that's a me problem = yes I know its my problem no one else but it still pisses me of. I'm sure some stuff pisses you of to

These generation names have been around for decades. I knew my parents were Baby Boomers when I was growing up and we used to refer to ourselves as Gen X when I was a student in the 90s.

Everygrain · 18/06/2024 08:11

Gen Y and Z should have been called something completely different as the name is too close to X so gets mixed up, previous generations had better names so more recognisable, calling them Gen Y or millennials adds to the confusion

No, it’s not just a you problem, it’s a me problem too! 😄 I was just thinking the same the other day

Everygrain · 18/06/2024 08:19

@Ds8and9 Yes I'm a Baby boomer and my parents are Silent generation, I have always know that as the names are clear. DS is a Millennial or Gen Y, why has that got 2 names, I never know what he is, as it's too similar to x and z

AnOldCynic · 18/06/2024 08:20

Grammar police are out in force I see.

@Ds8and9 I'm the same, can never remember.

WormBum · 18/06/2024 08:22

It’s not a new thing. I learnt about generation names at school 30+ years ago.

unsync · 18/06/2024 08:23

I've known I'm GenX since I was a teen way back in the 80s. We are the feral ones.

Everygrain · 18/06/2024 08:25

Why are Gen Z Zoomers, Zoom wasn't invented then, Zoomers should be later.

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 18/06/2024 08:26

I hate that Boomer is now used as an insult. (I’m gen X and find the way it it used as a insult similar to racial slurs)

DaytripperShoes · 18/06/2024 08:27

They are just a way of grouping people into age cohorts - they are vaguely useful in my work which is economics. Problem with lumping people into any group is that differences within the group are always greater than differences between groups so you shouldn't get carried away with meaningfulness.

Try not to take them personally.

Gen X-er, the coolest generation.

ApothecaryRose · 18/06/2024 08:27

Everyone has to have a label these days. I find it deeply depressing.

You mean spellings? I have dyslexia and learning difficulties . So that's why if that's what you mean
