Sick son - need advice

NeedHelpWithSickSon · 17/06/2024 02:51

DH and I have been out tonight and I got a stressed phone call from my son (18) who was being violently sick in the toilet. He then said he was OK.

Now it is 2.50am and he has just been violently sick again. He has eaten a whole pizza (salami and Nduja which is a pork sausage) which he cooked from frozen as per instructions.

As said he is being really sick. I am really worried to death as he is being sick and he also has 3 A’levels papers this week.

What can I do for him right now, and…help. What can I do?

Thank you everyone.

He has been sick 3 times, the last at 0700. He says he feels rough, his stomach is gurgling and he doesn’t want to eat.

Hopefully no more sickness.

If he's not been sick since 7 am chances are that might be it
I have has sickness bugs and although unpleasant the rarely last more than 24 hours
I would speak to school my sons school applied for consideration last year when he was doing his GCSE,s aa he had been in intensive care a few months before exams started and subsequently was off school for weeks, its only a few marks but might help if he's still feeling rough.

Whether it’s a bug or food poisoning, what do you want 111 or even a GP to do? It’s one of those things you just have to ride out I’m afraid, it happens. If he’s that ill will his exams not get postponed?

How can they do that ?
My son was diagnosed with Diabetes last year just before his GCSE, s he missed one exam because he was hypoglycemic and was feeling rough ,the exam board just graded him on the one exam he took.in that subject

I don’t know, that’s why I asked? My children aren’t exam age so not sure how it works

LightSpeeds · 18/06/2024 14:43

How did he get on today, OP? Did he manage to do his exams?

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/06/2024 14:45

We have found with ours that if they can’t hold water down, they can suck ice or slowly eat ice lollies. It’s really important to try to keep him hydrated.

Best thing he can do is to sleep it off. Hope he’s better soon.

You just need a medical certificate and you can resit the exams: edumentors.co.uk/blog/what-happens-if-you-miss-a-gcse-exam/#:~:text=What%20Happens%20If%20You%20are%20Sick%20on%20GCSE%20Exam%20Day,eligible%20to%20reschedule%20the%20exam.

Health comes first. There is no point sending a kid with potential norovirus to infect hundreds of people simply because one is scared to miss an exam 🤦‍♀️

You don’t need to do anything right now, he has only been sick twice. Treat him like you would with any other D&V illness - small sips of fluid to rehydrate him, preferably something with electrolytes. Given that he has A levels to sit this week I’d get in contact with the GP in the morning so that you have solid evidence of the sickness for the exam board

This. He either has food poisoning or probably just a stomach bug. Lots going round. Unless he has been vomiting for 3 days you can relax

I’ll try and get him a GP appointment if he’s sick again. I need him to stop being sick.

I’m so upset. He’s worked so hard and he’s been up all night.

My DH is blaming me for buying junk.

What can I get him to stop being sick and what’s good to rehydrate?

Don't let your husband try and blame you for this by the way. You can't prove it was the pizza, there are so many sickness bugs doing the rounds, and even E-Coli , which could have been contracted through eating a grab and go sandwich.

As for 111, I once rang them about being ill with D& V, and there isn't really much help they can offer for this, they will just advise to keep him hydrated and take dioraylte. I'm an emetephohe so I panick when I get a sickness bug , which is why I rang.

Lucozade or full fat coke, very small sips if he is still feeling tender. Bland diet whilst he's recovering, toast, no dairy which can feed a bug. I hope he is well for his exams.

Last night he felt better and had been taking electrolytes and then ate a bit. This morning he was a lot better, so he sat the exam today. It went ok.

He ate some dodgy fast food and then vomitted it all up over a few hours on Sunday. He doesn’t have D&V or norovirus.

That's great that he's on the mend and made it in for his exam...
