Anyone work in airline baggage handling?

Missed my flight earlier but had already been through duty free and the shops. Bought some toiletries and will have to do security etc again in the morning, so my products would need to be dumped.

A very, very kind lady at baggage let me check one of my hand luggage bags for free and put all my products in there. BUT my case doesn't have a lock on it and isnt taped up.

Are all baggage areas camera'd to within an inch of their lives? Am I likely to see my bag in one piece or will it be rifled? Getting a bit worried about it now..

No it isn’t sorry. Depending on where you go and what pops up when they get scanned it might be looked through.

ElTortilla · 16/06/2024 21:39

Are you scared that the baggage handlers will thieve your duty free?

Sinkingfeeling952 · 16/06/2024 21:40

I rarely ever lock my check in bags and never had anything stolen

When we check in and do a night bag drop our cases are never locked or taped

JemTrulyOutrageous · 16/06/2024 21:40

I don't mind security opening it and looking in it, I just don't want stuff nicked.

(Not helpful but dying to know how you missed your flight if you were already through security and in duty free?)

swissrollisntswiss · 16/06/2024 21:46

We never lock our cases and have never had anything stolen. Is it that common? But also, if you had time to go to duty free, how did you miss your flight? Out of curiosity

swissrollisntswiss · 16/06/2024 21:47

@Artesia Snap!

hastalav · 16/06/2024 21:48

I never lock my checked luggage, so far never had a problem either.

I do put clips to attach the zips together, but that's just to stop my stuff from falling out if the zip thing moves around at all!

I'd be more worried about the bags going to a different destination, which is more likely than theft.

TheSixQuarks · 16/06/2024 21:49

I think it's highly unlikely your toiletries would be nicked from your bag.

JemTrulyOutrageous · 16/06/2024 21:49

Like a fucking idiot, got to the gate 5 mins late 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

I wasn't the only one though, there were nearly 10 others too.

But they wouldn't shuttle us to the plane which pissed me off a bit because there was still 20-25 mins til take-off and I've been on planes that were delayed past their take-off time while waiting for late people.

Out of interest, had you checked in baggage already? I think that's one of the excellent reasons to have baggage in the hold because they are more likely to let you on rather than attempt to find and offload your bag!

No, I only had carry on.

Some people had hold luggage and they took that off but couldn't shuttle us to the plane and let us on 🙄

They didn't let you on the plane because they have to have a cut off time. If they miss their take off slot with ATC they might have to wait ages. Everyone would complain about a late flight. They know that if they bend the rules people won't learn to turn up on time.

backinthebox · 17/06/2024 08:03

The gates have a set cut off time these days that is set by powers that be above the grade of the gate staff. Get to the gate past cut off time - they won’t let you on. A line has to be drawn somewhere, otherwise people would be sliding into the gate with 2 minutes to go and insisting they be let on. And yes, bags in the hold will be offloaded in this situation. Tbh it is an almighty ballache for airline staff, we do wonder why people would bother to get to the airport then not bother to actually get to the flight in time. Especially those who go to the bar or shops.

Anyway, to answer your question - no, don’t be stupid. A baggage handler has passed a multitude of security checks before being allowed to work airside. They are not going to risk this by pinching your deodorant. 🙄

My case seems OK, I haven't opened it yet, still travelling.

My flight this morning was letting people on right up until 5 mins before we started moving, so nice to see the airline is consistent, not Hmm

I'm guessing that you are the OP. Quite often the people getting on late are standby passengers who only get on when other passengers (like the OP) tuen up late to the gate so get offloaded. It's not the same as just turning up after the flight has closed.
