What shall I ask for to cover my grey hair?

For the last 20 years I have asked my hairdresser for highlights. I have naturally mousy brown hair that was blonde as a child. I go for two shades of blonde and it lifts it and brightens up my face nicely.

However I am now getting increasing numbers of grey hairs, especially at my temples. And they are frizzy and stand out! Highlights don’t catch them all and they become obvious when I put my hair in a ponytail even when my hair is newly dyed, and especially when the roots start to show.

Is there a method of dying my hair that will cover ALL my greys?

And also, is there a sort of top-up method where I can dye the greys as soon as my roots start showing. I’m 38 and not ready to go grow old gracefully yet!

I've sort of given up and now have coloured glosses, it turns the grays into highlights and makes it shiny, it also fades in a less obvious fashion when your roots grow in.

Thanks, I will research glosses!

Superdrug wash in wash out toners work pretty well ….

I then give my head a quick scoosh with schwartskopf root spray to catch anything that’s left behind, I also zip it down my parting because it instantly makes your hair look much thicker. But be sparing, it makes your hair stiff if you use too much.

I could've written this post although I'm recently 39. Going to the hairdresser in Wednesday for first time since October so watching with interest! Yes, I have awful roots and greys showing but it's so expensive and time consuming I leave it way too long. I've been using a John Frieda touch up spray, like a coloured dry shampoo, recently which does an ok job on the horrendous grey streak at my temple.

Can you tell me which brand you use?

I'm confused what a gloss is. Google suggests it's less than a semi permanent, but I've not seen in shops.

HazelLion · 16/06/2024 23:36

What you want is demi-permanent dye, lasts about 25 washes and fades out gradually.

Could ask for more ashy highlights to blend in.
